I think it is a slap in the face to UL fans. Here is my reason we are 3 hours from Nashville and would have painted the city red. The reward she be to the teams and fans that support them. Sending UL to the Belk Bowl adds another 4 hours to our drive. Ask many of the teams around the ACC and they will tell you that in year 1 of the ACC the Cardinal Nation traveled well. So because we travel so well (Just Like the UK fan base) UL fans wanted to be in Nashville if we couldnt go to Florida.

 

Also a few years a go the Belk Bowl status wasnt at the same level currently. So that is another reason UL fans are upset. Many feel 9-3 record deserves a bigger bowl. I actually thought the Gator Bowl was the spot UL should have landed.

I'd agree with everything you're saying... The only thing I'd say is it appears to me that UL could have gotten an upgrade by getting a chance to play Georgia. It is a further drive but not so bad UL can be a force. If UL wins it will be a much better win IMO than beating LSU at Nashville.

I think Louisville playing the higher ranked opponent is better than playing closer to home. Better to play/beat a ranked team than a non-ranked team.

 

Only real down side is that Music City pays $100K more than Belk.

 

UL Players seem to want to play Georgia...

Senior offensive lineman Jake Smith said he and his teammates were excited about the selection.

"I grew up in Alabama and SEC country. I really relish this opportunity. That's who we want to play. They're a team you see on TV all the time."

 

The most obvious story line is the matchup of Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham against his former team. Grantham was Georgia's DC for four seasons before joining U of L coach Bobby Petrino's staff earlier this year.

 

Big advantage for the Cards having a D Coord that knows the Bulldogs inside and out.

I thought UL would get a better bowl as well, given their record. They didn't so they are delt the hand they are given, just like everyone else in the FBS.

 

As far as your comment about UL traveling so well, so it is a slapm in the face to have to travel farther now, that's a bit contradictive don't you think? If a team travels well, it travels well. Which would make sense that with some of these bowl games they may have a well traveling team travel farther to make sure the game is a sellout.

 

Honestly I don't see what the problem is unless the UL fans don't want to travel past Nashville. But you mentioned that there wouldn't have been a problem with traveling to Florida. Outside of the travel issue, I can't see the issue.

 

You are playing a more favorable matchup, in an equal type bowl, in warmer weather, against a bigger ranked team than LSU. Again, I don't see what all the whining is about.

I don't see the problem, but of course I'm a whiny UK fan..... Sure, we're in a great conference, but the smart UK fans know what we are so I don't think I'm pounding anything.

I think UL will keep it close.. However I will say your rational thinking holds more water than LSU being scared to play UL does.

In the end, I'm pretty happy to get a matchup with a Top 25 opponent relatively close to home.

 

As things were unfolding, I was pretty furious with the whole process as it just reminded me how much I hate this whole system. As the news was unfolding on Twitter, it looked as if the Music City wanted Louisville and LSU but that LSU wanted to play Notre Dame instead. Whatever. All over now.

Gaylord Entertainment sponsored the Music City Bowl in their first few years. Franklin American Mortgage Company signed on for a four-year deal to sponsor the bowl from 2010-13. However, the ACC has sent Wake Forest, NC State, and North Carolina to Nashville to face Ole Miss, Vandy, and Tennessee. Not exactly sexy matchups.

 

This year, FAMC re-upped as bowl sponsor for six years and moved up the bowl ladder to secure either an ACC team or Big Ten team. I'm guessing the Music City Bowl people saw a chance to snag Notre Dame and jumped at the chance.

Nashville is in the middle of a sports period where they hosted the Women's Final Four this year, locked up the SEC men's basketball tournament for 12 straight years, building a new downtown baseball stadium for their AAA team, and will host the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. I think they wanted to add Notre Dame to their bowl to boost their sports business resume.

 

It doesn't matter the W-L record, Notre Dame football is still Notre Dame football and offers a larger regional draw than Louisville does, despite the Cards being three hours up I-65. Bowl people can also secure more secondary sponsors with ND than Louisville.

 

This was a much complex decision to take Notre Dame over Louisville than Xs and Os.

It isn't all that complex at all. ND has an ACC tie in, and gives a bowl game instant national juice. The folks in Nashville took advantage when they had the chance. As cut and dry as it gets...

Completely agree.. I hinted at this earlier, however I didnt have the data you have to back it up. I doubt you will get a response though. Once I started making sense of the situation I didn't get a response either.. We are just chest bumpers.

 

Truth be told though, these bowl games are all about money. ND/LSU is a larger draw than LSU/UL. No question about it.ND will pack in as many people as UL would, not to mention LSU will bring plenty as well.. Then there is the tv aspect of it. There is a reason ND has its own tv deal with NBC.
