10 Favorite Louisville Games All-Time

Featured Replies

Fun exercise here at the moments before the dawning of a new season.

CD Kaplan made a list here.

Any games ol' Seedy K missed out on?

Remember when UofL used to play Dayton every year? Me too. PITINO'S RUNNIN' SCURRED!!

2. Louisville 82, Michigan 76 (4/8/13)

8. Louisville 93, West Virginia 85 (3/26/05)

9. Louisville 78, Syracuse 61 (3/16/13)

10. Louisville 78, Syracuse 68 (3/06/10

Louisville 75, Memphis State 74 (3/12/05)

These are the only ones I was alive for. :lol2: But they all definitely make the list. I remember every single one of them like it was yesterday.

I hope Darius Washington is still crying.

Off the top of my head, I'm personally partial to the game against Notre Dame in the 2011 Big East tournament semifinals.

We had lost to them in OT at Notre Dame earlier in the year. Ben Hansborough was a huge thorn in our side as his brother had been a few years earlier.

The Louisville defense clamped down on Hansborough and held him to arguably his worst game of the year, despite Preston Knowles playing the entirety of the last 10 minutes and all of overtime with four fouls.

One of many insane games with Notre Dame in the Big East, but my personal favorite.

The one in Freedom Hall in which Samardo Samuels basically fouled out ND's crop of forwards by acting like a beast for 40 minutes plus two overtimes the year before is another all-time favorite for me.

Oh! Oh! Oh!

Can't believe I didn't think of this right off the bat:

Louisville at Marquette, 2003. Reece Gaines vs. Dwayne Wade.

Remember that stretch of games @ Marquette where we won in dramatic fashion? It was like 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009.

Yeah Kaplan's old and it shows. My real memories of Louisville basketball start with one of my first conscious moments of feeling really cheated as a sports fan: Louisville losing to Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament in 1996 because Tim Duncan gets about five steps of continuation on a foul.

We'd have gotten WORKED by that insanely talented UK team in the regional final (and so part of me is glad it didn't happen) but that was the first time I remember getting that common sports fan feeling of "We got hosed."

My List

1. Original dream game

2. 80 title game

3. 86 Conference title game vs Memphis St.

4. 86 title game

5. 83 semifinal loss to Houston. Hard to like a loss but that was an unbelievable game. Dunks, Blocked shots, and Guy Lewis towel toss.

6. 13 Title game

7. 13 semi final game vs Wyoming

8. 80 NCAA game vs LSU. We supposedly had no chance to beat them

9. 86 NCAA game vs North Carolina

10. UT game in Pitino's first year when Reece Gaines hit all those 3's in last 30 secs to win.

Yeah. Really came to dislike Marquette and especially Tom Crean. That dislike has not subsided. Remember the second game against Marquette in 2003 when Crean was screaming that Ellis Myles was faking an injury? Turned out he'd torn a tendon in his knee and would miss the next 18 months.

Absolutely hated that guy. Made Marquette a fun enemy, though.

1986 regular season final against Memphis State. Down by 1 with a few seconds left with Memphis State's Andre Turner (90+% free throw shooter) at the line with a 1 + 1. Replay shows that, as U of L is breaking from the huddle, Billy Thompson asks Coach Crum, "what if he misses?" Coach Crum quickly responds, "he's not going to miss, but if he does, get it to Milt. Milt, go down the sideline and take the shot" (or something to that effect; forgive my memory, it was almost 30 years ago). Memphis State fans were already celebrating because Turner never missed a free throw. Well, Turner missed the first free throw, Billy Thompson gets the rebound, he gets the ball to Milt, who goes down the sideline and takes a jump shot from the corner (that was before the 3-point shot was in effect). Milt missed, but was fouled, and Milt, looking as if he had no cares in the world, hit both free throws and U of L won 70-69. We ended up beating Memphis State against in the finals of the conference tournament and winning the national championship.

Every UofL fan I know over the age of 40 talks about that game as among their favorites. Milt Wagner was just awesome.

This one is near the top for me. Remember that for like a year, we kept using the term "Pittsnoggled"?

8. Louisville 93, West Virginia 85 (3/26/05).

Nostalgia alone puts this none on my list. What a way to go out!

10. Louisville 78, Syracuse 68 (3/06/10)

More nostalgia. My daughter had just been born 2 weeks prior and I had barely seen my ex-husband those 2 weeks. :lol2: I was at home with a newborn watching, while he was out with his buddies.

4. Louisville 72, Duke 69 (3/31/86)

Not on his list, but high on mine:

Louisville 72 Wichita State 68 (4/6/13)-Tim Henderson-need I say more?

Kaplan's list is really slanted toward the postseason, but some of my favorite Louisville games were random regular-season contests that don't even have any real context.

The Miracle on Main in 2011 when Louisville came back from 17 down against Marquette with six minutes left is really high on my all-time list but doesn't have any real significance as far as banners go. Heck, that was the season we got knocked out in the first round by Morehead.

Of course, there was only one consensus all-American on the court for that game and he didn't play for Louisville... 13-seed my foot.

While they ended up on the short end of this game, 1983 final four against Phi Slamma Jamma. There were a lot of athletes on the floor that night. I always love the McCray brothers and Lancaster Gordon. There was a guy who was golden from the free throw line, but only seem to get in when there was technical foul, has kind of a funky name. Any help me on this one?

....

Hmm, off the top of my head, these would be my 10 favorite UL games:

1. 2004 lost to Xavier in the first round.

2. 2011 lost to Morehead State in the first round.

3. 2010 lost to Cal in the first round.

4. 2000 lost to Gonzaga in the first round.

5. 1999 lost to Creighton in the first round.

6. 1995 lost to Memphis in the first round.

7. 1990 lost to Ball State in the second round.

8. 1981 lost to Arkansas in the second round.

9. 2007 lost to Texas A&M in the second round.

10. 2003 lost to Butler in the second round.

Just off the top of my head. :D
