The prenup has nothing to do with me. I can't control whether or not the other person decides to be a whack job 10 years down the road... If that happens, I want my stuff to be protected.

Somethings are out of our control. My love for my wife is irrelevant when it comes to a prenup, IMO. Like I said in my response to LA, if my wife decides she doesn't want to be married anymore or goes off the deep end, why should I have to give my stuff up?

Money complicates things, especially when there are issues. If you take money out of the equation each party is free to make more objective decisions about what is best for their future.

 

With all that said, part of the Prenup should include the "financial package" for the lesser earning partner that both sides are happy with. And if you can't agree to that, you probably shouldn't be getting married.

None for me.

Not that I EVER will get married again, but if a man required a prenup, I'm out. Period. You're either all in or you're out. I wouldn't marry a guy "protecting his assets" from me. Nor would I require him to sign a prenup.

I understand completely and respect your position.

^ No, I understand what they're for and, if we're being honest, anytime somebody wants to pay me money to write up a contract I'm happy to do it.

 

I don't subscribe to the current notion that they're useful for everyone. I do believe that the ability to have an open and honest conversation about finances prior to marriage is hugely important.

 

FWIW, if this guy in the article lived in Kentucky, a pre-nup may have protected some of the assets, but any waiver of spousal support on the part of the lesser-earning spouse is subject to judicial review.
