November 11, 201411 yr ^ No, I understand what they're for and, if we're being honest, anytime somebody wants to pay me money to write up a contract I'm happy to do it. I don't subscribe to the current notion that they're useful for everyone. I do believe that the ability to have an open and honest conversation about finances prior to marriage is hugely important. FWIW, if this guy in the article lived in Kentucky, a pre-nup may have protected some of the assets, but any waiver of spousal support on the part of the lesser-earning spouse is subject to judicial review. In other words, if you are loaded you are a fool to get married because the courts are going to stick their nose in your business no matter what.

Maybe, but if you're loaded, your entire life is a minefield of people trying to get after that money. Spousal support/maintenance is different from the division of marital assets. What I'm saying is that while a pre-nup can protect assets pretty well, there's very little way (under current Kentucky law, but it's shifting I'd guess) to divorce your wife and leave her cold, especially in a case like this as the duration of the marriage affects the calculation of that spousal support. So while a pre-nup may have protected the businesses or the property or other assets from the divorce proceedings, he may still have owed her a significant amount of money, though considerably less than she received in this particular case. As to whether or not someone's a fool to get married, there's a growing number of people who agree with you... pre-nup issue or not.

No one needs a piece of paper with ink on it to define their relationship. And we ALL need to learn to be independent. Being independent doesn't mean being alone, it means we can all stand on our own two feet.
November 11, 201411 yr Married since 1988 and she gets 1 billion of his 18 billion? I'm guessing that much of that 18 billion built up during the marriage so I think he's getting off rather cheap. Same thing I was thinking! He didn't suffer from that 4 letter word that all married men fear! HALF !
