Classic! IT's a song that defines an era and that is the 70's anthem imo.

Weren't those lyrics written to be an "autobiography" of Billy Joel's life via world news references?

Funny story (probably only to me) about "American Pie". A group of us were at Cassidy's on a Saturday night watching a game. We had a drunk loud-mouthed guy with us (every group has one) who was digging his heels in on some ridiculous point. With Karaoke starting right after the game, we made a wager with him that if he was wrong he had to a karaoke song (and he can NOT sing), and if he was right we'd pay his tab all night. As you'd expect, he was dead wrong.

 

The place is packed (as Cassidy's always was on a Saturday night), we waited until right after someone great went, and then signed him up to do the 10 minute (or so it seems) "American Pie". I have never laughed harder or longer than watching that guy sing that song for 10 minutes while being ignored at times, and then heckled at times, by a packed bar.

Totally off subject, but I feel that guy's pain. I went to a karaoke bar with a big group of friends one night and adamantly refused to sing (because I can't). A couple of hours into the night I hear the DJ say "...and now singing 'Man in the Mirror' by Michael Jackson is...Habib!" :lol2: I think a little part of the DJ died when he saw me getting shoved up to the stage to sing Michael Jackson. I turned the microphone off.

That song is a jam, "Man in the Mirror" that is.

Great song and for sure a classic...BUT...the most overplayed song I can think of on radio over the years. I almost can't listen to it any more because of that fact.

These days I never listen to music in my car. No cds no radio unless it's talk radio or a ballgame.

 

I like to kick back in my listening room with a nice sounding vinyl record on the turntable.

I always listen to the entire album side one side two. Giving up listening to music in my car has helped me to enjoy listening to great songs that have been over played. Overkill...

I'm like AA, I rarely listen to music in the car. For the most part, I can't take talk radio anymore, so I generally listen to audio books and ballgames, when driving.

 

I really hadn't heard the song in years, until I played the YouTube CWB put up in post #1. I am a child of the 70's and this is an anthem. I love the song.
