Walter tweeted Bo Schuh had a big one handed dunk in transition for the Colonels in the 3rd qtr. Colonels led Oak Hills 44-27 I believe.

St Henry beat Western Hills

 

Covcath beat Oak Hills 62-46

 

Cooper beat Loveland 72-56 behind 19 Sean McNeil pts

 

Dixie up 34-23 at the half on Loveland with Rabe leading the way at 12 pts

Dixie 60 Glen Este 43 Final

 

Bolin finished with around 20 followed by 14 from Rabe

My observation on each team after seeing them today:

 

St Henry:

 

Connor Kunstek is going to have a great year. Nice footwork underneath and so strong with the ball. He has great timing on his shots and despite going against more athletic big men, really played well down low.

 

Paul Wallenhorst also played well from what I saw. Long and athletic and very versatile as he scored at all three levels.

 

Didn't see much from Green but he was active defensively and St Henry played really good team ball at both ends. Tough to give a true evaluation on them though as I believe the "starters" only played one half.

 

Covcath:

 

Cooper Theobald played with a lot of confidence and has some swag to go with his game. I thought he attacked the rim with strength and did a nice job finishing through contact while handling the point guard duties. He will definitely be a key piece to the Colonels success this season.

 

CVH was CVH. Got in the lane and finished and did a nice job defensively but I felt the area he has improved the most is with his jump shot. He knocked down the mid range jumper and outside shot with consistency and also looked good running the point.

 

Bo struggled a little at the beginning but once he started playing within himself, really impacted the game at both ends. He had one stretch where he hit a turn around baseline jumper, then had a steal and dunk (one of two dunks), then knocked down the 3. If he plays like that consistently, Covcath will be tough to beat.

 

I also liked Grant Romes energy at both ends and think Sweeney and Massie can give nice minutes off the bench.

 

Overall, Covcath isn't as talented as last year (IMO) but I think their depth and physicality on defense will really give teams problems. They showed multiple full court and half court defensive looks and executed them well.

 

Cooper:

Just my opinion, but I felt they were the most impressive team that I saw today.

 

Sean McNeil made a strong case for top 10 player in the region. Kid has grown and really worked on his body and was able to score at all three levels with consistency. He is clearly the offensive leader of this team already, which is scary considering he is only a sophomore. He will put up big numbers this year but what impressed me the most was how well he defended and rebounded.

 

The player that I was surprised the most with was freshman Adam Kunkel...finished with 9 points but ran the point like a kid that looked way more advanced than a freshman. He handled the pressure well, got in the lane and finished, and also knocked down the outside shot. The trio of him, Hendrix, and McNeil in a 3 guard lineup over the next 3 years is going to be hell for opposing teams.

 

In the front court, Liechty has really filled out and added some muscle and strength. Him, Hathorn, and Hawkins did a nice job controlling the paint and all three were active at both ends. There were times that they gave up some offensive rebounds from being out of position but overall were effective.

 

As far as Cooper's depth, Dragan, #23, and I believe #34 all three give Sully options and did well when in the game. Cooper, IMO has the talent, size, athleticism, and length to compete with and possibly beat anyone in the region. Newcath is still the favorite but if Cooper plays with the intensity (consistently) that I saw today, they are going to be tough for anyone in this region.

 

Dixie:

Tough to get a true gauge on them since Moore and Hedger will be big pieces in what they are going to do this year but I felt Mitch Bolin played really well and looked much improved from last year. He showed a nice turn around hook shot and finished consistently at the rim while also hitting his free throws. Would like to see him crash the boards harder but he has excellent footwoork and has a pretty nice touch on his shot from what I saw before the game.

 

Rabe ran the offense well and will be Dixie's leading scorer more often than not this year, IMO. He is the most consistent perimeter threat but I also felt he set his teammates up really well. Just a solid all around game. Reminds me of a smaller Mikey Gabbard.

 

Schreck played well too and after a few early turnovers really settled in and played well at both ends, including a nice steal and dunk in transition. He crashes the boards at both ends and does so many of the little things that go unnoticed. High basketball IQ and extremely smart kid. Was told today he scored either a 31 or 32 on his ACT.

 

Dixie will be able to throw a lot of different looks at teams by either going small with Rabe, Meyer, Moore, Schreck or going big with Niehaus, Hedger, Bolin and two of the guards. Defensively today, they looked good in the zone looks they showed and also pressed to get turnovers and a couple easy buckets.

 

All in all, a solid showing by all 4 teams but I'm sure each coach would agree they are still a work in progress and have a long ways to go.
