Who did you see MOCO: play against?

Horrible refs. They failed to control the game from the start and it was like a rugby match. They would look the other way when a player was assaulted then hand out a yellow for players getting upset over the no-calls. A lot of players on both sides had legitimate arguments for the dozens of no-calls. These weren't tricky-tack fouls either. The numerous no-calls added fuel to this already heated rivalry and it took away from two great teams from playing great soccer. The refs are to blame, period.

 

I what you said pretty much falls in line with how I described it, just from someone's perspective that has been on these kind of games.

 

As far as cards for players complaining I only say one card that looked to be for dissent to a player and it was the Brossart keeper for leaving the box to argue on what could only have been a foul call by the assistant that caught him picking the ball up out of the box.

Saw them last year, at BG games this year and against Scott Co.

BB's GK deserved his card. Scott's entire bench got one for yelling at the ref for a no-call he clearly missed. 2 BB players yelled when they were annihilated and no call was made. The center ref was bigger than the game. He's lucky no one got hurt. Everyone knew coming in that it would be a war. Heck, that's why I went. But the refs did a terrible job of keeping the game in control. It's one thing to let them play. It's another to allow tempers to flare and invite injuries due to frustrations from the physical game the refs allowed to get out of control.

 

I will say this, the refs style last night completely favored Scott. That allowed them to play with the abandonment that they like.

Eh not sure I agree that his style favored Scott. He chewed on the Scott player number 8 pretty hard when he kept complaining.

 

I also think there were more fouls called against them.

 

Regardless that is just a fact of life that refs styles vary just like teams. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose that luck of the draw.

I agree with you on the refs. They called the girls finals right before this game. They let them play pretty physical also. Don't get me wrong, I love when the refs let the players play. But in both games, they missed SEVERAL hand balls, incorrectly ruled on out of bounds possession and wouldn't call fouls that were starting to escalate tempers. To me, a good ref SHOULD swallow his/her whistle and let the game develop. If things start to get heated, or if they see two players starting something, they should nip it in the bud right there. They can always tighten things up to keep things in control. But the longer they sit idle, the more precedent gets set and the players no longer understand what actions will draw fouls/cards. That was the case in both games last night.

Seriously?....the entire bench got one. That tells me he was not in control. You give the identified players a card.....if not identifiable then the coach....right?

Maybe I misspoke. Scott's entire bench and coaching staff erupted. A yellow was issued. Maybe it was on the coach. They were on the other side of the field. It was a group yellow card though, meaning he probably couldn't single out anyone because they all went nuts.

The card goes to the coach when the offender can't be identified. I'm guessing the coach got the card that's where a ref gets the most bang for the card.

Your opinion is valid. I have seen the opposite as well. Guy let the players beat each other bloody and not call a thing. They figured it out and wised up. Game ended up fine with no one hurt and everyone happy.

Thanks for the clarification. It was after a big uproar so on our side we couldn't tell.

Even if it's an assistant the first card goes to the head coach for not controlling his coach (or bench in other cases)

So after the season is over what's the next best sport thread one should follow in which posters are never happy (e.g., we won but the refs sucked, we won by 5 but should have mercy ruled them, coach picked the wrong formation, field/gym conditions, etc)?... not sure I could deprive myself for 8 months of entertainment.

Back to discussion of the game....

 

I think the observations presented by bothways and Heisenberg are really accurate. It was a hard fought game by two excellent teams. The skill level of these two teams is fun to watch. Very rough game by both teams; calls were made and missed for both teams. I heard 44 total fouls; 4 Yellow cards for Scott, 3 for BB.

 

My observations:

-34 is exceptional, but 7 is the straw that stirs the drink. Excellent player. The play dropped off significantly when he went out with a card.

-For BB, it was unfortunate the handball in the box by Scott late in the game was missed, especially since the game winner was earned (accurately) on a handball in the box

-BB coach's decision (and one I agree with) to sit players with a yellow had an impact on the game. I'm not saying it would have changed the outcome, but better to lose the battle (last night's game) than to lose the war (if a player were to miss next week's action as a result of 2 yellows = 1 red).

-Scott coach's decision to return 7 to the field after his card was gutsy. Not sure I would have been happy if I were a Scott fan, had he picked up a 2nd yellow and missed next week's games (Scott will prob draw a bye and only need to win 2 games to win Regional)

-33 for BB was outstanding. He was in 34's jersey the entire game, after 19 left the pitch with a yellow. He was able to prevent 34 from finding the back of the net, and effectively neutralized him. 34 still had a great game (MVP), but not the usual impact.

 

MoCo will have a say in the tourney next week, but it will surprise no one to see these two square off again next week.
