So after the season is over what's the next best sport thread one should follow in which posters are never happy (e.g., we won but the refs sucked, we won by 5 but should have mercy ruled them, coach picked the wrong formation, field/gym conditions, etc)?... not sure I could deprive myself for 8 months of entertainment.

 

I think several of us will be migrating over to the Club thread once their kids HS season comes to an end. A whole different dynamic... might not be as entertaining though.

Back to discussion of the game....

 

I think the observations presented by bothways and Heisenberg are really accurate. It was a hard fought game by two excellent teams. The skill level of these two teams is fun to watch. Very rough game by both teams; calls were made and missed for both teams. I heard 44 total fouls; 4 Yellow cards for Scott, 3 for BB.

 

My observations:

-34 is exceptional, but 7 is the straw that stirs the drink. Excellent player. The play dropped off significantly when he went out with a card.

-For BB, it was unfortunate the handball in the box by Scott late in the game was missed, especially since the game winner was earned (accurately) on a handball in the box

-BB coach's decision (and one I agree with) to sit players with a yellow had an impact on the game. I'm not saying it would have changed the outcome, but better to lose the battle (last night's game) than to lose the war (if a player were to miss next week's action as a result of 2 yellows = 1 red).

-Scott coach's decision to return 7 to the field after his card was gutsy. Not sure I would have been happy if I were a Scott fan, had he picked up a 2nd yellow and missed next week's games (Scott will prob draw a bye and only need to win 2 games to win Regional)

-33 for BB was outstanding. He was in 34's jersey the entire game, after 19 left the pitch with a yellow. He was able to prevent 34 from finding the back of the net, and effectively neutralized him. 34 still had a great game (MVP), but not the usual impact.

 

MoCo will have a say in the tourney next week, but it will surprise no one to see these two square off again next week.

It probably occurred with 3-4 minutes left in the match, a thru ball was played in the box, and 19 hit it with his arm. His body language indicated he knew he got away with one, but it wasn't called. Like I said .. no excuses .. great game by both teams. Everything left on the pitch.

 

I probably should have given props to 9 for Scott as well, along with the keeper. Very effective players. All were rewarded with All Tourney, and deservedly so.

Brossart's keeper kept the Mustangs in this game. Although both teams are very talented, without the play from Paulin, this Game would have been 4-1. I counted at least 3 one-on-one saves. One breakaway from Schneider, a blocked shot from Treadway after beating 3 defenders, and an attempted chip from Morgan (may seem fancy considering it was a 1v1, but the angle that Morgan had and the distance that Paulin came off his line, it was a smart shot). Paulin's save on Morgan was probably the save of the game for him. A pure reaction save. His hands were by his side expecting a shot along the turf, but when Morgan put the ball over Paulin's head, he reacted faster than maybe any keeper in the area to pluck it out of the air while off balance. Seay, Scott's keeper made his save of the game on a free kick by Henn. I had the perfect angle; directly behind the kicker and the goal. Henn's shot was a knuckling ball that swerved to the near post that would have slipped into the lower corner without the tip from Seay, utilizing his wingspan.

 

Keeper play was outstanding from both teams, and will be needed again when facing the high scoring attack of MoCo.
