October 16, 201411 yr The Vice President should always be elected IMO. A Rep./Dem combo at the top would be awesome. A Rep./Dem or Dem./Rep combo sounds good but we better get the Secret Service in order before that happens. If you have a president from one party and a VP from the other, there is much more motivation for a kook to take out the president if a follower of the VP party...
October 16, 201411 yr I read nothing that warranted the need to change a system that has worked for 200 years. The main argument was that the presidential nominee makes the call and the convention OK's the selection. The delegates have a chance to nominate someone else, but in recent years have not. That means hundreds of elected delegates are just rubber stamping a selection and not willing to stick out their necks. If one can make a better argument for a change, I'll listen, but the system has worked since the 12th Am. was passed.
October 16, 201411 yr On the author's debating the selection of certain VP's like Biden and Quayle, both these men are lawyers and were elected to office. Both made statements that made them look clownish, but who hasn't? Of course those of the opposing parties jump all over these gaffes. Some were true gaffes, some where political statements that their opponents jumped all over, because they saw an opportunity to knock either man. Was either man the best choice, maybe/maybe not? The situation were we had Ford and Rockefeller as our leaders was a fluke, but as I see it, the system worked. Constitutional authority was followed and we survived the crisis we were in at that time. The nation had a chance to give Ford another shot, but handed the reins to Jimmy Carter, once again the system that the Constitution provided worked.
October 16, 201411 yr ^If you mean elected to office via riding the coattails, well I'd agree. Has a ticket ever won on the sheer popularity or strength of a VP? I can't ever remember one. Perhaps one could sink you, ala the bulldog with lipstick.
