I work from home 365 days a year unless I go on vacation, then I work from the beach.

 

Maybe a little off topic but I get frustrated with people sometimes. They think because I work at home I don't really work and/or I should be able to do anything at anytime because I am home when in fact I have work to do.

 

Exactly! I hate how people concern themselves so much with other people. I hate that people feel they have to "slip" out unnoticed if they want to leave early to get to their sons event, or they work from home and people make snide comments about them "napping." I am extremely responsive via phone, IM, email when I work from home JUST to mitigate that as best as possible, but it drives me nuts that I have to worry about it at all. I don't care where people work and I encourage work/life balance/flexibility. I wish more people would enjoy that perspective.

I switched to a work at home employee 3 years ago, and I absolutely love it. No more commuting downtown and wasting 1.5 hours of my day. I get so much more done when working at home compared to going into the office. In the office, everyone wants to stop by and chat. At home, I only have 2 dogs that bother me 3 times a day (go out in the morning, eat lunch, and go out in the afternoon). I can cut my grass or get other things done at my lunch hour. As for my coworkers, I really don't care what they think, but most of them are work from home employees too.

I've had a home office since 2000. Can't imagine working in an office. I don't punch a clock so it doesn't matter when I actually am in my office doing work. I go out to see customers and then I'm back in my home office. Love it. It's a very flexible way to live.

 

I am the only person in my company in the area. Next closest guy is in Detroit. My boss has been with me for two days this year. Everything we do is by conference call, cell phone, and email.

This. God, THIS. My Mom and gf are constantly on me about this.

 

My gf works four 10's and when we first moved in together she would be excited about making sure she was off on a non-Tuesday. It was an issue for awhile but it's gotten way better and I'm building a dedicated office right now.

I have three team members that live in Kentucky, we go into the office on Tuesdays and the rest is from home. Majority of our work is via IM and e-mail.

LOVE working in my pajamas.

When I'm actually in office I hear quite a bit about it, but not from anyone that matters. My manager has said, "if you have high-speed internet you can live there".

I guarantee you there are people in my 'hood that think I must work the graveyard shift or that I don't actually work. They see me in shorts during normal business hours quite often.

When I first moved in I only worked from home a few times a month and now it's almost every day. I bet they think I got fired.

I also don't punch a clock and have found there have been days where I needed to leave for something so I am out the door (in my office) at 4pm. I then log on at night. Or during an IT release I'll be on at 1am working on a Friday or Saturday. People just concern themselves entirely too much with what other people do.

 

I would eventually like to work entirely from home or a a minumum 3 days a week.

If your boss trusts you and allows you to work from home, and you get all your work done, to hell with what any co-workers think...

 

And just as info, I've never had a job where I was able to work from home.

I am lucky that at my company every DBA works from home. So once I got promoted it was kind of assumed that I would start doing it even though I live 5 minutes from the office.

I'm glad I don't work from home. Bunch of nasty motherscratchers loitering around in the living room. No thanks.

I see this as a large part of the animosity and skepticism. It's a flexibility many wish they had and get bitter when they don't.

 

I have worked in peer groups where their leader micro-managed and didn't believe in working from home. My area is not like that all. It causes friction.

 

I spend my days on conference calls, web-ex meetings, etc. I could do that from anywhere in the world. I see no reason to spend 2 hours in traffic and 7 dollars a day because of petty drama.
