The Saints made a curious move this week when they waived linebacker Khairi Fortt, a fourth-round pick in May who was on injured reserve with the designation to return because of a leg injury.

That injury didn’t keep Fortt from making it through waivers unclaimed, however. The Bengals claimed Fortt and they’ve place linebacker Sean Porter, who hurt his knee in New England, on season-ending injured reserve to open up a spot for him on the roster.

Geoff Hobson of the Bengals website reports that Fortt is expected to pass his physical and he’d be eligible to play right away.

But all apparently was not well with the promising linebacker, who was claimed off waivers by the Bengals.

According to Katherine Terrell of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Fortt had missed several meetings just before his release. (Which makes it kind of surprising the Jets didn’t claim him to start at quarterback this week.)

Saints coach Sean Payton replied “No comment,” when asked about the move, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was glad to have an opportunity to grab a player many valued not too long ago.

“Things happened, and obviously New Orleans cut the cord, and so we’ve got a new player,” Lewis said.

It’s still strange that the Saints would choose to make an example of Fortt so quickly, although their 2-3 start suggests that they need a little shaking up.

But he traveled with the team to Dallas two weeks ago, so there’s little indication he was a persistent problem. His locker was cleared out Monday by the time reporters were admitted, as if he were never there.

Of course, he was also viewed as an odd fit with the Saints, a 4-3 outside linebacker in college being moved to the middle of a 3-4 at the pro level.

Sounds like we may have a player on our hands. One with a skeleton or two but still a player that fits our defense better than the Saints.

I look at it as the Bengals got a LB at league min in his rookie year and if he is a problem they can just release him without costing them much.

Sure.

I look at it as the Bengals signed a player that may actually help them.

I would have never said this a few years ago, but maybe Vontaze can mentor him. Speak to him about who Vontaze was before and who he is now. Explain what is acceptable and what is not.

Great minds. I was already going through in my mind the conversation Vontaze should be having with Khairi.
