You and me both, man. I was debating about that on Facebook with a friend of mine who is an AC/DC fanatic. Their old stuff is fine. I own most of their first handful of albums even... I just don't get why so many have such a deep connection with a band that's put out like 20+ albums consisting of songs whose lyrical base is a tightly woven tapestry of "rock is loud and awesome" and a whole mess of thinly-veiled references to sex acts.

You are right, it's really simple, almost juvenile stuff, which I suppose is even worse now, that these guys are in their 60's. They've certainly played those threes chords every possible way. But still, it's simple, accessible and ultimately just plain fun. You can never have a bad time when AC/DC is playing.

When I think of "songs of my youth" the entire Back in Black album comes to mind. Came out the summer of my senior year.

Don't get me wrong...I can absolutely rock out to Hells Bells, Livewire, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, TNT, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and You Shook Me All Night Long. That stuff IS rock and roll, no doubt.

 

I just feel like saying, somewhere around album 6 or 7, "Okay fellas...we get it. You like rock and roll, you like sex, and you really like figuring out how to incorporate those things into your lyrics, whether it be literally or through metaphor. How about trying to stretch your musical muscles a little and try changing things up a little?"

I used to be an AC/DC fanatic both Bon & Brian, and can still dig 'em at times, no doubt.

 

Then by "Flick of the Switch" which wasn't too too bad, it started feeling a bit tired, then "Fly On The Wall" really made me drop off.

 

I think I spinned that one twice, if that much.

 

I had to agree with critics of that time that they just kept writing the same album over and over. Only problem now was just not as good.

 

Even when their popularity resurfaced I was well on to other things and didn't bother.

 

It seemed like the world got fanatical about them all over again, and I was in a state of "Been There Done That".

 

They certainly are a fun memory of my teen days, and I guess I'll always have a special place for them somehow.

I don't disagree with you. While they were my first favorite band and I literally wore the grooves off "Back in Black" and "For Those About to Rock", I rarely go out of my way to turn their music on now. I even enjoyed the last album, "Black Ice" as they did do some things that were a little more bluesy. They are absolutely derivative and at this point caricatures of themselves. And it is kind of strange to hear 60+ year olds singing about their subject matter. But, to their credit, they've stuck with what works, never had a ridiculous disco album, never experimented with keyboards, never released any political statements in their music and have largely kept the same lineup (I know Phil Rudd left the band for a few years in the 90's). You know exactly what you're getting, and there aren't many bands that can say that.
