If you don't know it, I won't ruin it for you. But I will say this...my dad and uncles used to sing those songs in our living room playing guitars. And it's totally unlike any other album he's done.

Hopefully this won't be riddled with those who hate Springsteen...but here goes.

 

At the risk of posting a B-Ball-Fan-esque post, I'm working from home today and have been listening to my Walkman while I work all day.

 

I've always said Born to Run was my absolute, all-time favorite Springsteen song. But I've been listening to a heavy, heavy rotation the last few weeks, and there are a few songs giving BTR a serious run for bumping it out of number 1. Here they are in no particular order, and why:

 

Human Touch-seriously can relate to this. Who hasn't felt alone and just needed to feel like they were connected?

Lucky Town-Just an absolute great song all around.

Death to My Hometown-This may be the most serious contender for #1. First, that music is absolutely soul stirring. The words are harsh, the message angry, and it gets my blood pumping like no other.

Land of Hopes and Dreams-On the flip side of Death to My Hometown, a song filled with positivity and hope.

Badlands-An oldie but goodie, I never really appreciated this song enough in the past. After listening to it multiple times over the last few weeks, I have waffled with bumping BTR for it several times.

Shackled and Drawn-Reminds me of songs my dad and uncles sang when I was young.

I like the raw-ness of Brilliant Disguise and the pure emotion of Tougher Than the Rest. Human Touch fits in nicely with those. I really like the live versions of Lucky Town and Badlands. I always thought She's the One is a great song. I could go on and on but that is enough for now.

I think his post-Born in the USA stuff is painfully underrated. Tunnel of Love is as solid as its predecessors, but never gets the acclaim for a variety of reasons, but mainly due to the departure of the E Street Band and critics' expectations of another bombastic record like BITUSA. I'd never listened to Lucky Town or the Ghost of Tom Joad much until recently, and like I said, that was a mistake. The Rising is a remarkable album. Wrecking Ball is solid.

That's good stuff. I was disappointed I missed the American leg of the last tour when Tom Morello was part of the band.

"Thunder Road" is my all time favorite Bruce song. How can you beat "Roy Orbison singing for the lonely. Hey that's me and I want you only"? Also like "Meeting Across The River" which I have always considered to be "Film Noir" on vinyl. A few others I think are underrated are "Racing In The Street", "Out In The Street", and "One Step Up" from "Tunnel Of Love"

Springsteen wrote an album for Gary US Bonds and he and the E Street Band cut the backing music in the studio with him. This would have been between The River and Nebraska.

I made it down to the Charlotte show. It was incredible. Bruce and the gang are more energetic onstage than acts 40 years their junior. I've seen a lot of live acts, and nobody else is in that league other than MAYBE Pearl Jam.
