I believe he took over as Head Coach in the 90's and was an assistant there before that. I could be wrong though.

When you say, look at the recent success of Camp Co and Dixie now...Coaching makes a difference...just look at what they are doing! Yes, if coaching made that much of a difference, it didn't take them over 14 years to make the difference. It's been a couple years. So what was wrong with the plan when SK was still very mediocre back then?? Why all of a sudden is he a genius when he's been there over 15 years? You're trying to tell us nothing else has assisted in the success? It was just the master plan that is coming together from over 15 years ago...yet you site examples of Dixie and Camp Co that are changing things in a couple years. And I can tell you both those schools weren't much better off as SK over the same period of time. It's just the system huh?

We both know that, more then likely, Simon Kenton is going to beat NewCath this week, was that possible 10 years ago? What do you think beating NewCath means to the Simon Kenton players? It doesn't matter what level NewCath is on this year or what class they are in, they are NewCath to the Simon Kenton players.

 

Do kids care who won 10 years ago, when they were in elementary? It may mean something to beat the recent State Champs/State Runners Up, but had NCC not had those on their RECENT resume, would the SK PLAYERS care at all??

Please list for me all the cupcakes on the last schedule so I know what we are talking about. HC I will give you,bad schedule move. Is Collins a cupcake? They are only 4a but you have been screaming from the top of your lungs to schedule HHS & Cov Cath who are currently 4A. New Cath ok they are 2A but they also hold a winning record over SK. The rest of the schools are 5&6A programs I believe.

 

Let me say this, who isn't a cupcake this year? Now I understand that you didn't realize that some would be bad this year, but teams are going to have up and down years so you need to account for that. If you only have a couple decent programs on your schedule each year, well when those programs are down, then your schedule becomes very weak. A 6A school, IMO, should never have anything below a 4A team on their schedule. Period. And I would hope the 4A teams they have on the schedule are legit. That's just my opinion. Has nothing to do with SK. I don't care if you didn't win a game last year. Just the way I'm wired. Don't modify your schedule because you had a bad year. Play the teams you're supposed to play at your level and the kids will be better.

You are attributing SK success to enrollment size.! There are plenty of putrid 6A programs, some of them are here in NKy.

I'm not contributing anything to enrollment size. Enrollment size between 6A schools have absolutley nothing to do with it. I'm saying you can't compare SK to Ryle because SK has a huge advantage and that is open enrollment. So you need to compare SK with another 6A team in NKY that also has open enrollment because that makes more sense than Ryle or Boone for that matter.

Holy Cross was coming off of a state championship when they and SK scheduled each other I believe. So at the time I can see why SK would do it. It didn't look like a cupcake game then.

 

Wow! They are a 6A team. No 1 or 2a team should be on their schedule ever...if they are striving to get better. Did anyone really think HC was going to sustain their success back then??? Were they proven powerhouse or did they have a very nice group of athletes go thru there. Again, SK is 6A!

Fist of all this success has been going on for 6 or 7 years now with the exception of 2011. Second I am not sure you understand how bad this program has traditionally been. CC and especially DHS were in much better places when the current coaches took over, they have simply elevated the programs. SK I believe had 5 winning seasons in their entire existence prior to 2003.

 

I believe you when you say you want SK to succeed, we all do, but we just disagree with the paths to be taken. This last schedule was more challenging than the one before it and the next one will be considerably more difficult than the current one. Trying to skip steps will find you taking more steps back than forward.

 

BTW I like good intelligent conversation about the success and failures of this program & I can appreciate that it can be difficult at times for various reasons.

I don't bash Boone County Schools. I cite Boone County football programs as having similar opportunity for success as SK, but failing to do so.

First off that sure sounds like bashing, and secondly Boone county schools don't even come close to having similar opportunities as SK. They are by far with th greatest disadvantage. You may get tired of hearing it but closed enrollment is a HUGE disadvantage no matter what way you look at it.

Correct, but they would still be teams considered "who you're supposed to play". And a down T and X are still going to be more challenging than even a 1 or 2a state champ!...let alone an average 4 or 5A team.

 

It's really a moot point now, because it appears they are doing something about it. Even though they are still only scheduling a couple 5a schools. LOL.

Watching SK from the outside, it looks to me that a few years ago when they went to finals with a very talented team and favorable playoff match ups, the coach became a believer that it was possible to be successful at SK, before that I am not so sure. The following year they went to play at X in the playoffs and gave them all they wanted. Once him and the other coaches looked around and saw that they could compete for titles, if they made some changes looking long term. So, after the year Chad Lawrence graduated, they decided it was time to commit to building a program and not just try to have the best team year to year based on what was returning, to do that they fully committed to two platoon. Now, going this route costs them some wins and might have caused some doubt if they were really doing the right thing but to their credit they stuck to it and after the first year the ball got rolling and it started to feed on itself and more kids starting to come out to play. Obviously having an increase in population helps, but if you are not showing results on the field and having a lot of kids seeing playing time on Friday night, kids are not going to come out and play.
