JBS 66 Estill 56

Featured Replies

I thought the JBS and Estill crowd was very respectable towards each other and both teams showed good sportmanship.

UK96,

I told you I would apologize if I were wrong about Estill's crowd, and also the outcome. I got both wrong. So here it is......I APOLOGIZE!

I didn't get to make it to the game, but when I tuned into it there was a liitle over 2 minutes remaining in the game and a tied score. Then POW....JBS hit a 3, Estill missed one then fouled Clark.....and before you could blink JBS went from a tied game to a 10 point win.

My mistake was thinking they wouldn't be as effective as earlier in the season without Collins.

BTW, what did you think of the Engineer's train sound by their band? It's a little something different, and identifies with their nickname.

I was at the game, so I can make a few observations.

Coach Tiller called a bad game. Why would you zone shooters? JBS hit like 80% from outside the arc and most were completely uncontested. Second Estill the much taller did not utilize the inside game at all. Third they did a horrible job of rebounding out of the zone. Help defense was non-existant. I have seen Estill play at least 8 times and by far this is thier worst performance. I do not understand how you play right into JBS hand. They are young and good shooters. Follow the Hazard pattern pressure and rebound and no uncontested shots. Thats it and pound the ball inside against that zone it would have been a field day. I will say that Cox impressed the heck out of me. He is tough nosed player and may have led JBS in rebounds. As far as the crowd I don't know that I saw a difference in the size from either side and I did notice that an official did warn the JBS student secton about something. The gym was not half full on either side plenty of room left. Estill did travel light though last night. JBS has a nice young team, Stepp handles every possesion and decides who gets the ball. Cox can penetrate and everyones else lines up around the arc and shoots after Stepp penetrates and kicks. Play man to man and very physical and I believe Hazard will be successful.

I agree. He got outcoached and if their is a better 8th grader in the mountains he must be tough. Cox is hard nosed good player. Will he stay at JBS?

It was a close game throughout and both teams played hard. I thought that Estill and JBS both showed good sportmanship from fans and players. I honestly had not watched Estill play before last night but they were a good ballclub.

JBS hit their free throws at the end and that was the difference. JBS is very young and you dont always know how a young team will react under pressure.

Stepp made some good decisions with the ball in the 2nd half and Cox was awesome.

Estill had some really good looking players that were tough to handle but I think they did play too much into the game plan of JBS. I would probably have thrown the ball inside more if I was Estill.

The Estill band was awesome and the train sound was the best thing I have heard in a long time.

Great Win for the JBS program!!!:thumb:

Good Win for JBS....good luck against Hazard who is looking very strong right now

I'm a little confused with the assessment that estill appeared over confident "strutting their stuff" or the idea that Estill had the "big head" because they came from the 10th region to the "more inferior" 14th region. I think they had great respect for the new region but felt they had chance to win.

It seems to me one team had a player make plays in the stretch and that was JBS. Estill came to play and keep in mind it was a Monday night 2hrs and 15 minutes from home in a town they had never seen and gym that was COMPLETELY new to them. Estill has traditonally had a great following when they are winning and had they made it to Friday night, the train whistle would have been very impressive. JBS lost 5 games all year.

Bottom line: both teams played the triangle and 2 for the entire 2nd half. That forced the 'role" players into a bigger role. Number 3 sank 4 threes in that stretch. Game OVer

JBS defeated a good Estill Team and is poised to go deep into the region. They have a young team that should make some noise for the next several years.

I, ofcourse, was at the game....and well - Estill was JBS's best player. Pure and simple.

It's the 2nd worst game that I've seen them play all season (the Breathitt one being first.) It was the same team that showed up in Breathitt though. No focus. No energy.

When Cackling hit a big three to bring Estill to a 1 point lead over the crusaders - the bench acted as if they were down by 20. Minimal clapping.

Dixon played a pretty good game, and Berryman had a good first half shooting wise. Puckett played well again. I thought Reese should have been utilized a lot more than he was. I thought he played a pretty good first quarter and spent too much time on the bench in a close game. Christopher is really going to have to learn to pass the ball more effectivelly. He has great speed and can handle the ball pretty well - so he could be a great dish and assist man to Berryman and Kackling next year - or take it on the hole and draw a foul.

I really think Estill dropped the ball by not taking pep busses to the game. I am not sure the exact reason why they didnt but I heard three different stories from three different school officals - but oh well. I really thought the band should have been closer to the court as well. I was on the 2nd row behind the Estill bench and I couldnt hear them from my seat.

As far as the fans goes - they were pretty decent. The small group of students who braved the 6 or so hours of driving there and back were into the game - more than the bench thats for sure. JBS's fans for the most part were pretty fair - however, the student section got out of hand. I know that they spit on one of the cheerleaders and their sign, "53rd Champions, 56th Losers" that was taped on the wall should have been removed.

I really liked the gym at Knott County, but overall, the planning and seating (of the bands especially) was done extremely poorly.

Tate Cox is exceptional - and Stepp is a ball hog.

Estill had no transistion defense all game. Christopher took a botched charge on the right wing but that was about it.

Dixon should been utilized a lot more inside. He had a guy about 3/4 his size gaurding him down low - but they went with three's and mid range jumpers most of the night...most of which didnt fall.

Overall, I wonder if more fan support (which could have happened has thier been a pep bus) helped Estill's pride and enthusiam. If Clinton had been utilized more and Estill set up bettter and less hectic offensive play calling - the outcome would probably have been different.

Oh, and the officate was excellent. Great job to those 3 refs. Havent been able to say that much this year.

Just to clear things up on the pep bus situation - I talked to an administrator at the high school yesterday and I found out the gist of why there wasnt one.

Being as though Estill played Friday night - and the turn around was only 2 days (on a weekend no less) there wasnt a chance to get permission slips passed out to the students. It just wasnt possible to get clearance to take a bus load of kids without permision, or to get that permission in such a short amount of time.

I was told had Estill made it Friday night - there would have been more going. Including the pep bus.
