Just from what I can remember abt each of these teams, I'd go:

 

1) 2000 Boyle Co

2) 2009 Ft Campbell

3) 2002 Breathitt Co

4) 2005 Mercer Co

5) 2013 Desales

 

The 2013 DeSales team doesn't come w/in 21 of the '10 NewCath team. That team was awesome. The size and athleticism on the lines was completely underrated.

 

I don't know enough about the other teams to form an opinion. We played the '97 AA champs and beat them. We lost to the A champs by about a thousand. The year before we beat an 11-2 Newport by a touchdown, that same team was smoked by Breathitt, so I really don't know how to compare them.

I really wish Boyle County was in AAA in 2000. In the mid-to-late 90s going in to the early 2000s AA was considered the weakest of the 4 classes, IMO. I never fully bought in to Boyle, because of that, until the '01 season. Maybe that is unfair but you cannot ignore the lack of strength in AA around that time.

 

I've always thought Boyle was handicapped by some because of that very thing.

 

The difference IMO was the talent that was on the roster was competitive to any team (even the great HHS teams of that era) regardless of Class AA status. '01 was so great but all Boyle backers would tell you the year before was even more talented. Travis Leffew, Justin Nichols, Matt Quinn, Boomer Johnson were all weapons that were lost from '00 and yet despite going to AAA Boyle never lost a step.

 

The other thing that got me about those teams was Danville. The Ads lost twice in '00 and '01. Both to Boyle and the Rebels pasted the Class A champs 47-0.

How much of Boyle's dominant run do you personally attribute to Chuck Smith?

 

There is absolutely no doubt the man is a football guru and a sensational Head Coach with elite skills, but was it all Smith's presence during those years or was a large part of it a very "up" talent pool at the time? Obviously guys like the Tamme brothers, the Leffew brothers, Matt Quinn, a coach's son like Brandon Smith, and the Millers', Begley's, and Overmillers of the world don't just grow on trees.

 

Was it the perfect storm that led to Boyle's dominant run or was it in your mind that Smith simply was "THAT GOOD" that he turned guys who would have been great high school players into elite players and D-1 prospects?

 

Just a curiosity I have had over the years while Boyle has been "down" (A Down that 99% of KY Programs would give their right arm for).

 

Strictly from my viewpoint it is hard to argue against the raw talent some of those guys had...but I also look at a kid like Duggins who in my opinion deserved Mr. Football. I think at any other school Duggins would have been a good QB, but at Boyle under Smith he grew to a next level talent and one of the best players in KY.

Jeff Duggins was 2001 Mr. Football.

A lot of it was talent, but you where going to have to have someone to get all of that talent to play together. And I believe with out Chuck they might not have won all the games. Now I still believe that they would have won the State Championship. In practices they say that Chuck was hard core but he was also a motivator. If you screwed up you paid for it but was then patted on the back and told that it was ok get it right the next time. With out Chuck I'm not for sure if we win 5 in a roll.

Combination of everything working right at the right moment.

 

Talent was there but it was built up by Smith. He is the ultimate drill instructor of "doing it the right way." Technique was the secret weapon of his teams IMO. He literally got teams that weren't blazing fast to contain some of the quickest teams you would ever see. Danville, Tighlman, HHS, Harrodsburg, Hopkinsville, Lex Cath - he did some of the best defensive work to contain their speed and take it away from them.

 

In 2003 I was at the Semi-Final Game vs. PT. They were far more talented than Boyle (Joe Casey, Hunter Caldwell, some very fast wideouts) but Boyle's technique gave them fits. Casey had only one long run of 80 yards but he only had about 40 the rest of the game.

 

People forget that Boyle was a player as early as 1995 when they lost a heart breaker to Danville in the playoffs (10-7). In '96 they blanked a good Admiral squad and lost a squeaker at Breathitt in their run (12-7). They had a blip with injuries in '98 but then the pieces came together. Once they opened the door they set up house for the rest of his stay.

 

What shouldn't be forgotten is that Pardue was his OC and he did a fabulous job developing QB's: Johnson to Duggins to Smith. Will the OC be as good in this tenure? I would also add that the talent grew up within his system and the first seven years really set up the next six. :thumb:

2008 was the year you were thinking, the worst football team Mf has had since 1970. FC beating them so bad maybe why they didn't play in 09, Mf was flat trashed
