Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds 2014 Football Preview

Featured Replies

When it comes to football up on the “hill”, since 2000 when they hit the field in the heat of July and strap on the pads and helmets, NewCath footballers expect to be playing for a state championship in the cold of December. There is plenty of evidence to support this; NewCath has made the State Championship game 9 times since 2000 with four titles (2005-06-10-12) and Runner-Up 5 times (00-01-07-08-13). Also, since 2000 the Breds have compiled a 157-43 record, with 2009 (7-6) as the only season without recording 10 plus wins.

The 2014 Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds will still have the expectation of returning to Bowling Green, as Head Coach Dan Wagner and staff prepare for another challenging season. They will battle through the usual tough non-district portion of the schedule during the 1st 5 games as they will play 4A Ashland, 5A Cooper, & 6A Dixie, Simon Kenton, & Campbell Co, before they return to 4 straight District games before ending the regular season with their annual “slobber knocker” against Beechwood.

Coming into the 2014 campaign everyone is wondering, who will take over for the departed quarterback Mac Franzen? Vying for the starting QB duties will be Jr. Erik Anderson (6’2” 165), So. Patrick Henschen (6’4” 178), and Sr. Grant Schilling (6’2” 182). Look for a two-man battle between Anderson and Henschen for the starting nod. On the other side of the ball, replacing LB Jack Sutkamp and DE Tyler Lyon probably falls to Jr. Kobe Tallon (6’0” 210) and Jr. Luke Kues (6’1” 175). Both these players were starters last year and are “hard hitting”, so the year of experience under their belt will go a long way in the success of the Breds on defense.

The receivers this season will have to rely on their speed, instead of height, and returning to the receiving core are Sr. Nate Enslen (5’10” 145) & Sr. Brandon Gray 5’9” 172), both possess very nice wheels. Also, look for Jr. Griffin McHugh (6’2” 190) to see a few thrown his way.

Returning for his 3rd year of varsity action in the backfield is Jr. Jake Smith (5’11” 180). The speedy junior is a threat to “take it to the house” whenever he touches the ball, especially on punt and kickoff returns. Also in the backfield, expect to see So. Kole Carmack (5’7” 180), Jr. John Harris (5’8” 177), and Jr. Peyton Davis (5’11” 168).

The OL/DL returns a solid group of starters in Jr. Maleek Lawrence (5’10” 230), Sr. Colin Hoover (6’0” 202), Sr. Logan Neff (6’1” 207), Jr. Konner Carmack (5’11” 215), Sr. Jacob Raleigh (6’0” 240), & Sr. Jacob Wieland (5’10” 215). Also, look for Jr. Kameron Winter (6’5” 270) to see plenty of time on both lines.

In addition to those mentioned, a nice core of sophomores should see plenty of action on both sides of the ball……Job Freppon (6’0” 172), Spencer Pangallo (6’1” 180), Austin Neff (6’2” 185), Kurtis Sutkamp (5’10” 175), and Tyler Brooks (6’0” 286).

Two Questions:

1.) Has NewCath become the perennial favorite in 2A, 5 of the last 7 seasons been to the state finals?

2.) Can anyone on their side of the bracket compete with NewCath?

I was thinking New Cath might slide down a little this year. The numbers in the program are decreasing (just like school attendance I am told). The underclass teams have been just ok. But when I look at the players returning I think NCC will be right there again this year. The QB performance is going to be huge. Smith has to stay healthy. In fact, injuries are probably a concern as I would guess there is not a lot of depth. NCC will be right in the mix again if they stay healthy.

Who are the other top teams in NCC's side of the bracket?

Just some of the teams on the Breds side of the bracket off the top of my head.

Gallatin Co.

Walton-Verona

Middlesboro

Somerset

Danville

Prestonsburg

Lexington Christian

Quite a few "2nd stringers" last year were "thrust" into playing for injured starters. At 1st it was rough, but they got better with the playing time when it mattered.

I think one of the biggest needs will be punter and place kicker, lost starters at both positions to graduation. If they can't find one on this roster there are plenty of strong legs on the soccer team, and the boys soccer team has a few as well. :D

NCC has a 50/50 shot of making it past the regional playoff.

NCC has a 50/50 shot of making it past the regional playoff.

Why would you think that?:sssh:

Walton should be good this year and NCC has alot of weaknesses to fill.

The first 3 playoff games are against perenially weak teams. That gets Ncc to the semis every year. I like their chances unless they are ever realigned with Beechwood. I think Ncc has some solid football guys in the Jr. Class. That gives 2 more years of 2A caliber teams.

Everyone always thinks NCC has a bigger roster than what they do. If you look back at the 2000 team that made the State final you will find the exact same number of SR/JR/Soph as this year. They pretty much always have between 40-50. Probably 2009 team was the smallest roster as they only had 7 SRs that year. Pretty sure all the teams they met in the playoffs last year all had more SRs than NCC did.

That said the non-district games will be a challenge. Ashland with stud RB will be a task and then it does not get any easier with Moore from Dixie and 6A SK and Camels. If they come thru that healthy and get some needed QB experience they will be tough to handle in the District.

When was the last time NCC lost a regular season game against a district opponent?

They have never lost a 2A district game since being moved there with the change to 6 classes.

Great review. I like the addition of the full roster. All reviews should have them.
