Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader has learned Udoka Azubuike, the No. 1 center in the 2016 recruiting class, picked up an offer from Kentucky last night. Azubuike’s high school coach told Roberts Cal called Sunday night with the offer and that UK isn’t alone in wanting the big man. “They all want him bad,” he said.

Azubuike, who isn’t related to Kelenna, unfortunately, is the No. 9 player in the 247Sports’ composite rankings. He also picked up an offer from Duke yesterday.

Coach Cal made the jump today in offering 2016 center Thon Maker, currently listed as ESPN’s #1 prospect. There’s been interest from Kentucky for a while now, but if there’s such a thing as “Facebook Official” with the recruiting process, it’s the scholarship offer.

2016 shooting guard Tyus Battle visited Kentucky today, and now, he’s got an offer. According to Adam Zagoria, Battle picked up an offer from Calipari while on campus this afternoon, one day after visiting Louisville and getting an offer from Rick Pitino.

Battle’s father Gary told Zagoria that getting the offer from UK was a dream come true for his son:

“Not in a million years would I ever expect that at 16 years old, that my son, that we’ve been working since he was 6 years old with a dream to play college basketball, that we would have
the best of the best
,” Gary Battle, the player’s father, told SNY.tv by phone Tuesday evening.

The 6’6″ Battle is considered the 11th best player in the 2016 class by 247 Sports Composite, and already has offers from Indiana, Michigan, Syracuse, UConn, Virginia, Ohio State, and others. He told Zagoria that getting an offer from Cal is “a great feeling,” especially considering Cal’s track record of getting players to the pros:

“It’s very attractive because you know it’s Kentucky. He recruits a lot of high-level kids, recruits a lot of pros so it’s very attractive.”

This is the sixth offer UK’s given out in the 2016 class. On Monday, Cal offered 7′ Thon Maker and center Udoka Azubuike. MJ Cage, Harry Giles, and Jayson Tatum also have offers.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei center M.J. Cage is one of the top prospects in the west for his class.Extremely skilled at 6-9, 215-pounds, Cage put up 22 points on 11-16 shooting in a Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei blowout win over Houston (Texas) Yates High School. He also snagged 14 rebounds and had four blocks and four assists to only one turnover.Ranked No. 19 by 247Sports but only No. 46 in the 247Sports Composite, Cage looked every bit like a top 10 prospect in the country.

Schools on the west coast and also Kentucky are well aware of his abilities. Cage listed offers from Kentucky, UCLA, USC, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Arizona and Washington along with interest from Florida State.

Head coaches from UCLA, San Diego State and Washington have visited Cage this fall, and he noted UCLA and San Diego State as the schools currently recruiting him the hardest.

Kentucky basketball recruit Harry Giles made his much-anticipated return from a serious knee injury over the weekend at the Nike EYBL event in Virginia.

Giles, considered the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2016, suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus last June while playing for Team USA.

He played his first game in 11 months on Saturday, going for eight points and 10 rebounds in just 15 minutes on the court for the CP3 All-Stars. In the second game, Giles was 0 for 7 from the floor and scored one point in 16 minutes.

The 6-foot-10 power forward said last week that he planned to take things slow in his comeback, and he did not play in either of his team’s two games Sunday.

Giles was one of the first recruits from the class of 2016 to earn a scholarship offer from Kentucky. The Winston-Salem, N.C., standout visited Lexington last October for Big Blue Madness.

UK, Duke and North Carolina are considered the favorites in his recruitment.

Florida center Udoka Azubuike has received a scholarship offer from Kentucky, his high school coach told the Herald-Leader.

Potter’s House (Fla.) coach Steve McLaughlin said that UK Coach John Calipari called Azubuike with the scholarship offer Sunday night, the first day that college coaches were permitted to directly contact players from the class of 2016.

Azubuike, a 6-foot-10, 265-pound prospect with a 7-5 wingspan, is ranked as high as No. 6 overall in the class by ESPN. McLaughlin said Calipari watched Azubuike play in person during the first Nike EYBL stop in Sacramento, Calif., earlier this spring.

High school basketball star Thon Maker has received a scholarship offer from Kentucky, his guardian confirmed to the Herald-Leader.

Edward Smith said that Coach John Calipari called with the offer Sunday, which was the first day that college coaches were allowed to directly contact prospects from the class of 2016. Smith said they also spoke to UK assistant coach Kenny Payne on Sunday.

Maker is considered the No. 1 overall player in the class by ESPN and is ranked No. 3 by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports.

The 7-footer from Sudan plays for the Carlisle School in Virginia, and he is considering a move to the class of 2015, which would mean he’d play only one more season of high school basketball before heading off to college. Smith recently told ZagsBlog that a decision on reclassification would probably be made around January.

Maker also has offers from Duke, Kansas, Louisville, Arizona, Indiana, Memphis and Georgetown, among others.

St. Louis sophomore Jayson Tatum is interested in Kentucky basketball

Tatum helped the Team USA junior squad win a gold medal in Uruguay by averaging 10 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, shined in summer league play and even came to Big Blue Madness at UK. He was back in Lexington earlier this month to play in the Goodfellas Pizzeria National Shootout at Lexington Catholic and UK coach John Calipari was there to watch him — again.

“It was an awesome experience,” Bennett said. “Everybody enjoyed being there and seeing the campus and it was really a good event.”

The trip included watching a Kentucky practice.

The next few years we are going to try and get out and play the best competition we can play. You’ve got to play the best to be your best. That will be our goal and what we will try to do.”

That competitive national schedule could likely include a trip to the Marshall County Hoop Fest in western Kentucky in December.

On the heels of hosting Tyus Battle Tuesday, Kentucky will host another 2016 5-star guard this weekend.

Upon the conclusion of the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va. this week, Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep junior point guard Derryck Thornton will also take a visit to UK, 247Sports Director of Scouting Jerry Meyer reports.

Thornton (6-2, 165) is rated as the No. 19 overall prospect and No. 3 point guard in the 2016 class by the 247Sports Composite.

John Calipari has been in contact with Thornton and his family since the beginning of the contact period June 15 and a scholarship offer could be imminent.

Michigan currently holds a majority stake in Thornton's 247Sports Crystal Ball but Kentucky is also represented with early picks.

My top player in the 2016 class. So smooth and efficient for his age...

Not good enough. He has a long way to go on the offensive end...

Can't help but think of Tubby's quote about Kelenna Azubuike: "He looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane."

Can't help but think of Tubby's quote about Kelenna Azubuike: "He looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane."

Not really the issue. He plays hard and will be a high level defender, but his skill set on offense is lacking in most areas. The times I've seen him he did nothing in the half court at all...
