Sour grapes? I can't speak for the Morris family, but I can assure you there are no sour grapes. The fact of the matter is, more and more kids are declining invites to these things due to the politics involved. And yes, I know for a fact that politics has been a factor in the process before. You are correct, these things are an honor...............when the best kids are chosen. Right now in the softball side of things, many of the best kids in the state are not included in the Jr/Sr East/West All Star games due to their affiliation with a certain club team......but that's for another thread.

Her getting and accepting a scholarship offer from UK heavily outweighs an all star game. I doubt they have any regrets.

"Politics" is obviously a word we throw around very loosely. Without getting into details about private conversations, I will just say that when common sense is not used in the selection process, we can only assume "politics", or worse..........incompetence is at work.

FBD, how should the process be changed in order to get the best kids from Kentucky playing for Kentucky? What do YOU think would work better? The bottom line is this: BEAT INDIANA. If victories don't matter to those involved - and it seems that to too many folks winning must not be a factor, then being a Kentucky All-Star is pretty much meaningless.

 

Maybe there is a better way to go about it, but you nor no one else, and I mean no one on BGP, has yet to pony up anything near a comprehensive and valid replacement system for selecting the Kentucky All-Star team who's mission is to, once again, BEAT INDIANA. All too often players, parents/family, AAU coaches or whoever it might be who play a part in the decision-making process ("the entourage"), get their noses out of joint because their egos are not stroked enough to compete and EARN a spot. Yes, senior year exploits, career stats, etc. are key factors in being nominated, but all of those occur in a variety of places and ways against dissimilar levels of competition. Therefore, a face-to-face tryout seems to be a valid way of doing it, doesn't it?

 

Unfortunately, there seems to not be enough buy-in from players and coaches to make this work. ALL coaches need to be active, vocal, AND WILLING TO SEND IN BALLOTS AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS. I guess this is just an old-school rant, but even the illustrious Coach Cal doesn't even want to play Indiana anymore, so ...

 

Where's our state pride in our high school basketball? Is it dead? Please, somebody enlighten me and other readers on a way for the Kentucky girls to regularly, in this classic historical summer series, to ... BEAT INDIANA! 'Nuff said, so I'll end on that note.

Some Coaches won't turn in the nomination forms. According to the Coaches I've talked to who've coached the AllStar team, it's nomination.

Indiana picks their team and invites the players that are picked. If I am not mistaken its picked by one person who can clearly evaluate talent. Its like NBA scouts(Indiana) vs pee wee league coaches(Kentucky). The results show this. Put a couple of people who are either ex college coaches or someone who sees the kids play in the summer vs top talent in America and let them pick the team. Only then are you gonna get it right, and until you do this, the results will be the same. There is your model.

Coaches I know say they email other coaches to nominate their players,

but from my understanding you cannot vote your own player. It's up to other coaches to put them on their ballot. Furthermore I agree with Archie evaluating players during the season would give a more accurate read than watching tryouts that do not include any teamwork and are chaotic from lack of team play. It may show athleticism but that's about it in my opinion after watching the last 8 years of tryouts. I would also say players that played in the state tourny probably get the benefit of the doubt when making the team because of team exposure. Not criticizing any coaches, players or others involved as I appreciate them putting this on and giving girls opportunities.!

Do the selected kids and their parents foot the travelling costs or are they paid for by the organising committee?
