Best Draft Class Team

Featured Replies

Can any draft class in history compare to the 1984 class to build a starting 5?

C Hakeem Olajuwon

F Charles Barkley

F Kevin Willis

G John Stockton

G Michael Jordan

Off the Bench

G Alvin Robertson

G/F Oscar Schmidt

F/C Otis Thorpe

What other Draft Classes would compare based on NBA careers?

The 96 Draft was pretty good too. Those are the top 2 IMO.

Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Antoine Walker, Peja Stojakovic, Stephon Marbury and Marcus Camby

84 was the best. 96 and 62 are good. 2003 was good too: LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Carmelo, Chris Kaman, David West. Some nice role players too like Josh Howard & Boris Diaw.

Nothing tops the talent of 84 though. Four of those guys are top 15-20 players in league history.

After looking at it, 1966 was pretty good w/ a five HOFs

PG Nate Archibald

2G Pistol Pete

SF Rudy Tomjanovich

PF Dan Issel

C Dave Cowen

PF/C Bob Lanier

PG Calvin Murphy

1985 would make for a Top 10 group

PG Michael Adams

2G Joe Dumars

SF Chris Mullin

PF Karl Malone

C Patrick Ewing

C Arvydas Sabonis

PF Xavier McDaniel

PF Charles Oakley

SF Detlef Schrempf

1987

PG Mark Jackson

2G Reggie Miller

SF Scottie Pippen

PF Horace Grant

C David Robinston

PG Kevin Johnson

SG/SF Reggie Lewis

2003:

PG - LeBron James

SG - Dwayne Wade

SF - Carmelo Anthony

PF - Chris Bosh

C - Chris Kaman

6 - David West

7 - Josh Howard (pre-injury)

8 - Kirk Hinrich

9 - Boris Diaw

10 - Kendrick Perkins

11 - Kyle Korver

Lots of depth; star power at the top with LeBron, Wade, Carmelo, and Bosh. I think 1984 is more loaded at the 2-5 slots, but there are a lot of guys in 2003 who've had long NBA careers. The 2003 looks like it has more guys like Kaman, West, Howard, and Hinrich who've either been All-Stars or had a significant role on playoff teams and/or longevity.

What are the chances that 2012 ends up being one of the better draft classes?

PG - Damian Lillard

SG - Bradley Beal

SF - Harrison Barnes

PF - Anthony Davis

C - Andre Drummond

6 - John Henson (averaged 11 ppg in his 2nd year)

7 - Jeremy Lamb (sleeper)

8 - Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

9 - Draymond Green

10 - Terrence Ross

11 - Maurice Harkless

12 - Terrence Jones (recognition if Houston builds a legacy)

Star power at the top with Davis and Lillard. Davis is on pace to become one of the top 5 players in the league (with some arguing that he might already be there). Drummond and Beal are oozing with potential and should be cornerstones of their franchises. They don't have the star power of Davis and Lillard now, but should end up being guys who have a shot at All-Star games, etc.

Guys like Barnes, Henson, MKG, and Green have roles where they play significant minutes on playoff teams. I think there are really good things ahead for Jeremy Lamb; he was getting a lot of looks in the playoffs, and he probably replaces Thabo Sefolosha in the lineup next season.

One of the trio of Ross, Harkless, and Jones probably ends up being a a guy you'd put at the end of the bench when you make a 9-10 man team from that class.

From a top-2 picks perspective it would be hard to beat 1960. Big O and Zeke from Cabin Creek.

Nah, Barnes is on there.

Isn't it early in the day to be sucking up to GT?

1996 -

PG - Steve Nash / Allen Iverson

SG - Ray Allen

SF - Kobe Bryant

PF - Jermaine O'Neal

C - Marcus Camby

6 - Nash/Iverson

7 - Peja Stojakovic

8 - Zydrunas Ilgauskas

9 - Antoine Walker

10 - Sharef Abdur-Rahim

11 - Derek Fisher

12 - Stefon Marbury

13 - Kerry Kittles (only one not to be an All-Star, All-NBA team, or have 5 rings)

Lots of star power at the guard spots with Nash, Iverson, Kobe, & Ray Allen. The class lacks big men who made a significant impact (i.e., in a way that separates them from the 1984 group), but Walker, Camby, O'Neal (probably the most promising, but ran into injuries), and Abdur-Rahim were all either All Stars or selections to an All-NBA team.
