US Marine in Mexican prison!!!

Featured Replies

You didn't. You mentioned Obama's good buddy, the professor who verbally abused two policemen who did nothing but perform their duty. Thank you for bringing up the incident that prompted the Beer Summit - it is a great illustration of how differently Obama's friends are treated than an average American or military veteran.

Obama's Department of Justice facilitated the illegal transportation of weapons across the Mexican border. Do you think Obama would be taking action if the Mexican government indicted Eric Holder or one of the other outlaws at the DOJ?

We have no reason to believe that this U.S. Marine intended to cross the border with three guns that were legally registered in the U.S. The fact that the DOJ intended to allow weapons to enter Mexico illegally has been pretty well established.

Why the double standard?

You might want to reread the thread. I didn't bring up the professor.

You might want to reread post #4 in this thread. I should have used the word "mentioned" instead of "bringing up" but my points were nonetheless valid. You are correct that the professor broke no law but Obama accused the officers of acting stupidly and implied that the race of the professor was a factor. In fact, the professor should have thanked the officers for making sure that his home was not being burgled.

I forget. What law did the professor break in gaining entry ino his own home?

My original post in this thread was that the professor broke no laws in trying to gain entry into his home.

That situation could have been handled better by all parties involved (the professor and the officer, most notably) and it's an area in which I think President Obama should have avoided. Clearly, we as a nation are not ready to truly discuss race.

I know what post #4 says, though I don't know why you'd want me to reread it. Again, I didn't bring up the professor, so you were in error in post #19. It's good that you see that.

All the Obama administration wants to do when a scandal breaks is discuss race. The officers (one white and one black) did nothing wrong. The professor refused to identify himself. If you locked yourself out of your own house, how would you react if the policemen asked you to identify yourself so that they could be sure that you were not breaking into somebody else's home? Would you expect or want them to simply take your word that you lived there?

The policemen did nothing wrong, the professor was rude, uncooperative, and unappreciative; but broke no laws - yet Obama made the story about racism in America. Now, an American Marine new to the San Diego area, made a wrong turn on the freeway and landed in a Mexican prison. Obama's response? Not a word after one of his men has already spent more than six weeks in a Mexican prison.

Nobody is arguing that the Marine broke no Mexican laws, but this matter should have been handled by Obama's State Department before it ever made the news. Thanks to a bipartisan effort led by Obama, this country is propping up the corrupt Mexican government by employing millions of its citizens. It is time for somebody to use his leverage for good.

All the Obama administration wants to do when a scandal breaks is discuss race..

Has race been discussed by the administration re: Benghazi? VA? P

Bringing weapons into Mexico is.

Unless you are the AG of the US, it seems.

Has race been discussed by the administration re: Benghazi? VA? P
I did not say that race has been discussed with regard to every scandal. I said when a news of another new scandal breaks, Obama speaks about race. What I meant by that statement is that Obama and his administration uses race to dilute media coverage of his many scandals and policy failures.

While the VA scandal was grabbing national attention, the Obama administration was talking about segregation, Donald Sterling, and the Washington Redskins' supposedly racist name (his surrogate Harry Reid led that effort).

The timing of Obama's periodic decisions to start national discussions on race is not coincidental. The blame Bush strategy worked for quite awhile but even his lapdog media grew tired of his whining. Now it seems the race card is also losing its effectiveness. Like bacteria treated by the same antibiotics for years, the media finally seems to becoming a bit resistant to Obama's treatments.

Obama and John Kerry sorely need a diplomatic win to snap long losing streaks and springing one of Obama's Marine corpsmen from a Mexican prison just might fit the bill. If Kerry cannot do this small job, then maybe he should call in Jimmy Carter to do it for him.

This thread nicely encapsulates the circular rationality of the partisan/anti-Obama right.

He hasn't/won't come to the diplomatic aid of this individual because Obama only helps his friends, black people, and most certainly not members of the military. But if/when he does come to the diplomatic aid of this individual it's to score a political victory to distract from other failings. /end thread

(And lest one claim that Obama jumped to the aid of his friend/racial ally Gates and will only act in this case because of media coverage one might be reminded that the Gates' case had been a national media story before Obama was asked to comment on it during an unrelated press conference. One thus might argue that Obama has been too eager to publicly weigh in on national media stories, but that would seem to belie the anger in this thread.)

(And lest one claim that because this individual is in the military that Obama has a special duty to bail them out, one might be reminded that this individual was not acting as a member of the military or as a part of a military operation when arrested and that many members of the military, veterans, and other Americans are routinely arrested for violating the laws of other countries and the issue has never been treated as anything other than a low-level bureaucratic affair.)

I see that you can't handle the truth. :lol2:

Go back and listen to Obama's comments about the Gates incident. He either lied about the events or he rushed out and launched into a rant without knowing the facts of what had transpired. Either way, the only reason for him to make the comments that he made was he assumed that Gates had been mistreated because he was black and Gates is his friend. Obama was elected president of all Americans - not the president of his personal friends and political campaign donors.

Call that circular logic if you want, but no objective observer could listen to Obama's rant and understand what actually transpired and believe that Obama reacted properly to the situation. The Beer Summit was nothing but a clumsy attempt by Obama to save face.

There is a pattern with this administration of major screw-ups followed by distraction, distortion, and delays. Racism is just a tool for people like Obama, Holder, and Reid. Any tool will become worn with use and Obama better be finding some new tools because his old ones are wearing thin.

It is amazing how little comment Obama supporters have had about the 36,000 convicted rapists, murderers, drunk drivers, and assorted other felons have been released from prison under Obama's authority. Yet most of those supporters believe that Obama owes nothing to a Marine who has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and simply took a wrong turn on an unfamiliar road that led him to a border crossing point.

So starting out by asking for their badge number and not receiving it is performing their duty and amounts to verbal abuse or are we just picking and choosing facts???

For a guy who likes to point out 'fallacies' the first bolded sentence of yours is quite an either or.

I think we all know that there was definitely a racial issue in the Gates case, but the overarching issue was that someone, especially someone so accomplished, was arrested in their own home.

Finally, I'm not the biggest fan of Obama, but many of the things that the rest of your statements throughout this thread apply to all parties.

If someone from the DOJ was arrested in Mexico, do you really think that ANY President wouldn't be doing something about it?

If you take a weapon into another country ILLEGALLY, then yes, you are subject to whatever penalty that may result. The fact that he "took a wrong turn" is his fault, no one else. If I were carrying my weapon near an international border, I would be certain of my whereabouts and what the laws in the other country were. Veteran or not, you are not exempt from obeying the law.

Thank you. Veterans have made a great sacrifice for our country and should be thanked for that.

On the flip side of that they are people too. I've sat in one more than one case where a non-combat veteran has seen some pretty damning evidence of domestic violence brought against them. Should give them a pass too?

Please note that in the example above, because as someone who has worked at a number of volunteer legal clinics for Veterans, I used 'non-combat' because I do think our nation has some serious issues with re-integration into society and getting adequate treatment for issues that arise from their time in the service.

So starting out by asking for their badge number and not receiving it is performing their duty and amounts to verbal abuse or are we just picking and choosing facts???
Here is a link to the actual police report. Read it and then let us discuss who is being selective in stating the facts.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Police Report

This was only national news because Obama wrongly assumed that his friend Gates was the victim of racism. Like I said in a previous post, the so-called Beer Summit was nothing more than Obama trying to save face after making a fool out of himself on national TV.

Ok. I'm sure a police officer is going to put, "after showing me his ID, he immediately requested my badge number, but I didn't give it to him."

I'm also going to assume that a Harvard professor in Gates case whose embarrassed/angered by someone trying to arrest him for breaking into his own home is going to know he can request his badge number and knows it's legal.

I'm sure the police arrested him, later found out who he was, and made sure he had every t crossed and i dotted in his report.

Maybe you are the kind of person who thinks that an officer has never lied or exaggerated in a report, especially when their head might be on the line. I'm not saying all do, just that it isn't really something outside the realm of possibility.
