Interesting facts most people don't realize about the Jailer in Kentucky.

 

In Kentucky by statute the Jailer makes the same pay as the County Judge Exec (most counties), The Sheriff and the County Court Clerk. (unless there is no jail)

There is an elected Jailer for many counties that do not have a jail.

Kentucky is the last state with the elected office of Jailer.

I think they are also responsible for taking convicts whose charges originated in their county from the regional to the state facilities as well, and back and forth for trials. I may be wrong on this, but that's the way I understand it.

Yep. I even have a picture framed on the wall of my office of me and a couple of others with big smiles standing behind Governor Beshear as he signed a piece of legislation.

Oh. Well, anyway, many smaller counties have shut down their older jails that were not up to code (this started in the late 80s I think) and now regional facilities are paid a bed rate to house prisoners from different counties. Jailers without jails deal with transport, and try to negotiate better bed rates for their local taxpayers. It's mostly a clerky-type job, really.

The Grayson County Detention Center campus is divided into three facilities. The main detention center building is located on Shaw's Station Road in Leitchfield, KY. Completed in 2001, it serves as the primary men's unit with county, state and federal inmates all housed at this location.

The Grayson County Female Facility resides in the old Grayson County Jail building at the corner of South Heyser Drive and East White Oak Street in Leitchfield, and the Grayson County Detention Center Annex is located directly behind the Female Facility on South Heyser Drive

Interesting. It seems like a county the population of Grayson would be too small to support such a thing, especially with a large facility next door in Hardin Co. Guess they've found out that the corrections business is a pretty good racket in this country, too.

Yeah the Sheriff's office does it in all of the counties that I am familiar with, but they all have a jail.

 

Does Jefferson County have a Jailer? General Assembly passed law several years ago that Fiscal Court can combine the position of Jailer and Sheriff. Lexington/Fayette did it I believe, I don't know of any others that have.

So..just as an interesting aside...I looked up the Breckinridge Co detention center. It doesn't have a website, but it does have a facebook page that you can like. :lol:

Jails would lose their butts of not for those types of prisoners. Federal and State inmates basically pay the freight for the rest.
