Realizing defense and earned runs definitely come into play but here are some stats based solely on runs per game.

Some thought before the season that Beechwood's pitching staff would be one of the best. Saturday, in two tournament games in Louisville, they gave up a total of 29 runs and I believe 119 on the year. Suchanek and Combs have been very strong on the mound yet as a team they struggle to keep the runs against minimized. What's the deal? Were they overrated as a staff? Are they scheduling games so close together that they cannot get their studs on the bump as frequently as they would like? I know part of it is that they were saving some guys for bigger games such as the All "A". Any thoughts?

Bellevue is often forgotten about being the small river school that they are. They have a team ERA of 3.59. This is while playing a serious schedule. The tigers have played:

 

Gahanna Lincoln (Columbus, OH) who had at least 4 college recruits on the roster. Including an Oakland University, and UK signee.

NCC (2 Times)

Louisville Butler

West Jessamine (#4 in the state)

Anderson High (ranked in the state of OH)

Simon Kenton

 

I'm by no means saying they are the best pitching staff, but if we are going to go plural and discuss staffs. Then the tigers certainly deserve some recognition. I would be confident in their #1 (Briley Seiter) and #2 (Brian Dill) against just about any lineup in Nothern Kentucky. Some of the biggest schools in NKY haven't played nearly the schedule that they have.

IMO Suchanek is one of the top pitchers in the region, but with his effort level isn't built to throw a complete game. Plus they need his defense at SS. He is carrying the load as the other players mature and show flashes of what we hope they can sustain with experience. Combs from what I'm told, his pitching has improved since summerball. The problem with HS is getting in bullpens and evolving grips as the pitchers settle into arm slots, release points and their mechanics. Things that are very important as the mph's go up. Will they get it together before regionals? idk but that is what's going to make this year so exciting! King and Brown with Freedom instruction, Ganns, Bellew and Suchanek with Flames instructors, Dunn with Bluegrass and all his dad's study and EKU throwing program, Stringer and Combs with Midland instruction, not to leave out C. Ross and Blaise O who are excellent on the mound! Pitching is the highest its been here in years. That is leaving out Kerns who I think is undefeated and even more. NKY teams have been more than holding their own with teams across the state, I for one like it!

Also add Boone County and Covington Catholic to the teams played by Bellevue.

Highlands pitching staff is extremely deep. Jones, Cochran, Bunning, Noe, Martin et all. Honestly I would think their team ERA is very low.

In looking at KHSAA real quick it looks like HHS is giving up 4.55 runs per game. No idea about ER though.

Anytime you have a Ricky Raisor, throwing 84 mph, strictly on your JV team, I think your varsity staff is okay. haha

I'm sure that number climbed a bit with a 19 run performance against Tates Creek. Great game to gauge where you are as a program for the Bluebirds, but never fun to take a thumping like that.

Yeah I would say that would equate to a below 3 ERA. And as stated above they have kids such as Raisor who is a monster on the mound throwing JV.

The 19 runs allowed to Tates Creek is calculated in that average. Only game missing appears to be the PRP game.

Hats off to Coach Sanders for that schedule. Didn't they also play Covington Catholic? If so, who pitched that game?

They did play CovCath, and Boone as well. Seiter pitched the first 5 innings of the CovCath game. It was 5-4 at the time of his exit.

I see Seiter has pitched a lot of the big games for Bellevue. What's the scoop on him?

The biggest surprise for me is Coopers staff. They returned basically their entire starting rotation but have only used 2 of the starters from last year to start and the other starters are JV players from last year. One is struggling mightly but still gets the nod.

 

Collin Hathorne who started last year hasn't thrown a single pitch and Blake McMahon who also was a starter last year has only thrown a couple innings in relief.

 

My only guess is the new coach doesn't know they were starters and good ones at that.

 

That is what really puzzled me so far.
