I disagree. He really struggled defending at the college level and I think that will continue in the NBA. I think Exum would probably be the best choice for them, it'd really help them at guard and get a lot more athletic. Plus he is a pass first point guard, something I'm sure Kobe would like.

Lakers can't rebuild the franchise thinking what would Kobe like? Exum may be the best pick, I don't know, but what Kobe thinks shouldn't matter a whole lot. No guarantee that Kobe can even play another season completely let alone be any part of the future 2-3 years down the road.

 

PP has converted me and I have reluctantly become a Kobe fan the last few years, but his time is winding down and the Lakers have to move on by planning that he won't be there and then if he is great.

That makes no sense. No one knew Kobe was going to only play 6 games this season. How do you not keep him as the emphasis of your team based on how he played last season?

 

Indeed they did not know he wasn't going to be full strength this season, but they do know that he is reaching the end of his career. All I am trying to imply is that they need to draft or trade for a player that they can build their franchise around along side Kobe.

If they are smart they'll draft the best player availabel and work the free agent market or make a trade at the same time and get two solid pieces for immediate play and for the future. I'd be shocked if Kobe can play more than one more year.

I didn't say to rebuild the franchise thinking what would Kobe want. I said they are in need of help at guard (they are) and he would make them a lot more athletic, which is something they need playing the Thunder, Clippers, etc 4 times a year. The Kobe comment was adding that not only is it helping the team, but it would satisfy Kobe IMO too, which is a win-win all around.

To assume the Lakers will build with the draft is naive. D'Antoni is likely fired after this season. The Lakers could end up with the #1 pick of the draft. The Lakers historically build through Free Agents and blockbuster trades. Kobe wants one more shot at a ring which means building through the draft isn't an option.

 

Nothing the Lakers do this offseason will surprise me. This is a good year to trade the #1 pick and get something in return for it.

 

Outside of Carmelo there are no game changing FA this offseason and they don't really have any trading chips to use for a blockbuster deal. Possibly in two years if they pull of a miracle but the Lakers aren't competing for a title next year.

Seems to be a fascination with Exum and the Lakers and vice versa, I think it could be a good fit. While I admit it would look better in theory to grab a wing to pair with Kobe (Parker) or big man (Embiid), Exum may be just the player they need to fill Kobe's shoes when he is gone. He can play both guard slots so eventually he could move over and fill Kobe's spot once he is done. If you bring back an athletic wing from this years team (Young, Johnson, Henry) and plug holes inside through free agency they may be in a pretty decent spot now and in the future.
