Officials gift regional semi-final to Henderson county

Featured Replies

Yes I do agree they blew the application of the rule. I also agree that the refs were horrible. The main thing I don't agree with is the use of the word robbed. I think that as adults we should refrain from harsh criticism and take away from such a classic game. There were a number of kids on both sides that laid it all on the line and left it all on the floor to say a blown call decided this game is bad judgement and I would feel the same way if it went the other way. I just love high school basketball. I hope I didn't offend you and want to say I appreciate the efforts of all the players on that court tonight.

I enjoyed watching the game. Can't give you an "it should have been this way" comment because, not being on the air anymore, I am not as tuned into what is happening. I WAS surprised that the UHA basket was taken away on the blarge call. I had never heard that term. And the only call I saw was the block call indicating an "and 1." Surprised to see the three officials huddling as if they were contemplating changing the call somehow. Surprised that they made it a double foul. Not knowing the blarge rule, didn't realize the basket should have counted. Presumed that Henderson was awarded the ball because of the possession arrow. Been interesting to read the comments. I can remember being that intensely disappointed at certain happenings in years/games gone by...sometimes as a fan, sometimes as a broadcaster. I'm guessing we'll always hear the "we wuz robbed" comments. I can remember (because of my parents' reminders for years) coming home from a high school game when I was an elementary student and bursting into tears when I walked in the house crying, "We got cheated."

MY team played the second game tonight...vs. Hopkinsville. And we didn't get cheated. We got stomped. The Tigers are pretty durn good.

If that is what the rule stats, then the refs did not get it correct, but when they brought the coaches together to explain what they called, the UHA coach should have questioned it then, if he knew the rule. I also agree that one call was not the deciding factor.

The refs are from the first region.

Most coaches don't know the rules either.

the refs ONLY job is to understand and know the rules. Coaches are supposed to coach.

I still haven't received an answer to why UHA didn't stop Henderson on either of the possessions after the blarge call? Or why they didn't score between those possessions? UHA was still up 4 with under 2 minutes to go and couldn't seal it. Heck why didn't they hold the ball and get to the charity stripe? The refs did not cost UHA the game.

No that is where you are wrong they better know the rules so things like that don't happen. You can be bet if I was coaching I would know the rules.

If a coaches job is just to coach, why does every coach in every sport in the Commonwealth of Kentucky have to take a rules clinic every year?

as a high school coach in a different sport this statement isn't correct we have mandatory rules clinics we must do on a yearly basis. If we shouldn't have to know the rules then why does the KHSAA make us do the rules clinics. Yes the blarge call was missed but as numerous people have pointed out the fact remains UHA has a 4 point lead with under 2 minutes to play and cant find a way to stop Henderson from scoring or get to the free throw line. As a coach it is my job to know the rules as well as a referee so in a situation such as this I can fight for my kids.

you are exactly correct. I am not blaming the officials for the loss. They should have played better defense.

I don't know guys I agree it was UHA job to stop em from scoring and holding on to the lead but man that was a bad call. When your a underdog like UHA getting the low end of the stick like that has to be a hard pill to swallow. The ref who called the block had to best view and was a foot away from the play. He should of held his ground and stuck to his guns!

Again, there is no "stick to your guns." By rule he had his call and his partner had a different call. They don't vote.

But both calls CAN'T be right......the fact that there is a "blarge" rule is inconceivable to me, though I've seen it called about 3 times in the last 6-7 years.

A. UHA did hold Henderson but they were called for fouls. Henderson scored the points from the line if I recall.

B. UHA did score. BUt they were called for anotother charge on a VERY questionable call. Perhaps under the old rules there may have been a charge, but in the new rules where the man has to be set before the player starts his motion there is no way it was a charge.

The one guy on here keeps asking "why didn't uha stop them". That shouldn't matter. The FACT is that UHA should have had 2 more points in regulation. Points were TAKEN OFF THE BOARD that had a MASSIVE impact on the game.

Secondly, two fouls WERE NOT called right away. Only one whistle was blown and only one official called a foul. The one underneath the basket who called the block. The official who called UHA for the two fouls on the last two posessions is who huddled the refs up and added the charge call.

So, it's clear some on here want to somehow run from the fact that the officials, NO QUESTIONS ASKED, took two points from UHA that shouldn't have been taken. We can discuss whether it was a well called game or not. (it wasn't) SO INCONSISTENT. But what cannot be argued is that 3 officials completly blew the APPLICATION.

And yes, as a former assistant coach, I attended football and basketball officiating clinics. The "blarge" rule isn't even in the rulebook. It's in officials notes. It's something that had to be addressed by addendum. So no coach should be expected to know such a nuance.

The officials were from the First region, Paducah area not from the Second Region. Blarge happens all the time, I think in a UK game this year there was one called. One official saw it one way and the other saw it another.

A charge/block call is the hardest to make in any level of basketball.

I get that it doesn't seem right. However, two officials see plays differently sometimes. The problem isn't seeing them differently. The problem is both officials signaling their call. You always talk about it before the game. What signal will we use to say "it's yours?" Who is calling the foul on a drive from the perimeter? Who watches the crash and who watches the pass if it's passed?

All of those are discussed. Yet...they're human. They get caught up sometimes and do what they said they wouldn't do.
