Officials gift regional semi-final to Henderson county

Featured Replies

Secondly, two fouls WERE NOT called right away. Only one whistle was blown and only one official called a foul. The one underneath the basket who called the block. The official who called UHA for the two fouls on the last two posessions is who huddled the refs up and added the charge call.

I need to see film before I believe that the other official didn't make a call. That NEVER happens.

He initially didn't make the call. Everybody in the gym assumed it was an and one. Only one hand was raised and one whistle blown. It was explained to me that the official from behind assumed a charge was being called. When it wasn't called a charge he came over and said "I was going to call a charge". Supposedly that's what was explained to shouse as he asked specifically why the other guy didn't make the call initially.

I'm ok with the "blarge" call. But A. The rule was applied incorrectly for that situation. The bucket should have counted. B. It actually wasn't called properly. As I have read in teh rule books, the blarge is only supposed to be called when there are two fouls called. Only one was called, a block. The official in the back assumed a charge was being called (that's why he called everybody together) and added a charge call. There is some discussion in hoptown today that that was even an impropper application of the rule as the rule states that two fouls must be called at the same time. Only one was actually called.

All that aside. A 6 point game is a massive difference in that situation. Likely makes it a 3 posession game and forces henderson to consider fouling and/or shooting 3's. It clearly changed the game in a massive way.

The officials were from the First region, Paducah area not from the Second Region. Blarge happens all the time, I think in a UK game this year there was one called. One official saw it one way and the other saw it another.

A charge/block call is the hardest to make in any level of basketball.

Calling a "blarge" is right up there with "falling down" and "my pants ripping" when it comes to things officials don't want to happen. I just can't imagine the guy didn't get himself in a jam in front of everyone yet after discussing it with his partners forced a blarge call. Doesn't make sense.

This is the same crew who didn't know that if the bucket is good on a blarge call you count the basket. Same crew that reversed another questionable out of bounds call a few minutes before. Same crew that called a contreversial 5 second call and the same crew that called a charge on a play that most officials, under the new rules would either make a no call or call a block.

Nothing that crew did last night surprised me. Pure incompetence, both ways. But UHA got the absolute shaft in the last two minutes and in the first overtime.

The outside official called the charge at contact not later as stated. We have all heard your side of the story over and over again. Sorry but you are mistaken on him huddling with the other refs before making the call. Would someone please post a link to what should happen in the event of a block/charge call because I can't find it anywhere in the ky high school rulebook.

it's not in the rulebook... it's a supplement. I've seen it online. I'll post it.

Thanks.

*4.19.8 SITUATION C: A1 drives for a try and jumps and releases the ball. Contact occurs between A1 and B1 after the release and before airborne shooter A1 returns one foot to the floor. One official rules a blocking foul on B1 and the other official rules a charging foul on A1. The try is (a) successful, or (b) not successful.

RULING: Even though airborne shooter A1 committed a charging foul, it is not a player-control foul because the two fouls result in a double personal foul. The double foul does not cause the ball to become dead on the try. In (a), the goal is scored; play is resumed at the point of interruption, which is a throw-in for Team B from anywhere along the end line. In (b), the point of interruption is a try in flight; therefore the alternating-possession procedure is used. (4-36)

I disagree. I did not see him call the foul and neither did the folks around me. Further, it was explained to the coaches what happened. it doesn't matter. The blarge rule was not enforced properly and likely cost UHA the game.

Ok thanks for the info on the rule. I wasn't trying to disrespect you but as you can clearly see there are numerous ways the play could be seen as you and everybody you were sitting with saw a block and myself and everyone I was sitting with saw a charge. Apparently the referees couldn't convince the other their call was the right call either. Great debate on a tough call either way it was a great game.

The tall ref called the block the short bald ref called the charge. So apparently you were not paying as much attention as you thought. The point is UHA had a 4 point lead after the call and didn't finish. The tall ref made as many bad calls in favor of UHA as he did against them. The kids left it all on the floor and adults want to whine about officiating. I'm sorry but bad calls are part of the game.

There seems to be a difference in recognition here. Some people are referring to the ref as the tall ref. He was on the baseline and he signaled block. You know how some people say refs give "payback" calls. That's what went thru my mind. He just overturned an out of bounds call to favor Henderson County, now he called the block to favor UHA. Then they huddled. Then we know what happened.

On the last play, where the charge was called. The UHA player ran over the kid. The kid was on the block and just waited. He got ran over; no discussion. I am referring to the one at the end of regulation. The UHA player took his man and actually got by him. But the #31 kid for Henderson took the charge.

This was a great game. A classic if we had it on tv. It will always be the one that got away or taken away; but each team missed free throws and turned the ball over without the help of the officials.

This was posted earlier:

"The outside official called the charge at contact not later as stated."

I was sitting on the opposite side of the floor...at the opposite end...and was sitting at a table courtside. I did not see the outside official call anything. When I heard the whistle, I saw the official on the baseline with his upraised hand and watched him to see what he would call. I did not hear nor see the outside official do anything.

And I'm pretty sure it was the official on the baseline who called the conference of the three of them. The longtime Madisonville team doctor...sitting beside me...said, "I wonder what they are talking about." Apparently he didn't see the official out back make a signal either.

I also would like to see video.

I appreciate the conversation guys. For the most part it has been civil. Great discourse.
