Can anyone guess what this is and what year it is from?

It has a nice history

Well, it is at least a half a century old (probably 60-70 years old or older) and is missing the figurine from the base section, but past that I wouldn't have a clue. It doesn't resemble any of the district, region or state trophies I'm familiar with, but then they didn't become standardized (from year to year) until mid-century or so.

Knowing Toothpick is from Mayfield, is it Cuba's state championship trophy? (They won the state, didn't they------in the early 50's?)

It is missing the figurine, I will give others a few minutes to take a shot at it and reveal what it is

If so, then it would be the State Championship trophy of 1952.

You nailed it!

Cuba High School closed years ago and the elementary school is set to close at the end of this school year. The trophy had been in Mayfield for a long time but is now at the elementary school. I assume it will be headed back to the high school at the end of the year.

When the won the title they had under a 100 kids in the entire school 1 thru 12 and Cuba is a mere wide spot in the road that does not even have a country store, only a couple of churches and lumber yard though there had been a country store years ago. The team credits their success to the coach teaching them moves from the Harlem Globetrotters. This was a real life Hoosiers movie

My guess is you are correct....

I've said for years that Cuba's state basketball title was even bigger and a better story for a movie than Milan, Indiana, the school that the movie "Hoosiers" was based on.

Here is another, one, this one maybe a little tougher

tcjktb nailed it and gets the credit - he provided the school name then it was no problem to go over to the KHSAA web site and review the list of past State Champions from there.

Nice job of putting the photo on here and retelling the story. Our history matters.

I agree he did nail it, I meant to give him credit and slipped up

This is the Cuba 1951 state runner up trophy

Neat!!! And it illustrates my comment that the trophies weren't standardized back then. Quite a difference in the two styles from the '51 Runners-up to the '52 Championship trophy.

And that Cuba was State Runners-up in '51 and State Champions in '52 makes what they accomplished even greater and more significant. Must have been a very, very special group of players, coach and program to have achieved that level of success for two consecutive seasons. The results speak for themselves.

Great story about the Cuba (Cubs?) basketball team. I've read the book a few times (Professor..was it a relative who wrote this?). I think it has a better story line than Hoosiers.
