I think Corinth (Grant County) was runner up in 1929, and then won it the following year.

 

And to merge two threads here in this post, I believe when Grant County consolidated many years later, they adopted the "Braves" mascot name from Corinth, because of this.

A little more about the Cuba Cubs of 1951 & 52

 

 

In 1947, Cuba hired Jack Story as principal and basketball coach & soon after arriving, Coach Story noticed a really talented group of 8TH graders. He showed them films of the Harlem Globetrotters and began the training of the Globetrotters ball handling skills. They lost in 1951 to Clark County, but they had long expected 1952 to be their year according to Marianne Walker, author of When Cuba Conquered Kentucky, a book documenting the Cuba Cubs’ journey to basketball nirvana. The Cubs, very much like the Milan team depicted in Hoosiers, came back the year after a disappointing loss with four of their five starters, and made an historic run at the title. They learned their lessons from Coach Story’s films and his lessons in ball control. They played a wide open, razzle-dazzle game that stunned most opponents. They took the court to the strains of “Sweet Georgia Brown” and put on an exhibition for the fans.

 

The Cubs returned to the finals in 1952 and beat DuPont Manual. It was a true David and Goliath story. Manual had the largest high school enrollment in Kentucky at the time and few schools with basketball programs were smaller than Cuba. And much like the Milan team of Hoosier's fame, the Cuba Cubs controlled the ball during their championship season. Fancy dribbling and crisp passing allowed them to freeze out opponents, allowing them time to take percentage shots. Their championship game victory 58 to 52 in 1952 ended in an historic championship game still considered one of the great games in Kentucky basketball. I hate to see the doors at Cuba close for good at the end of the school year but their story in 1952 will live on forever

fascinating hearing of these David vs Goliath stories. Corinth lost that 1929 game to Heath that is just down the road from Cuba. I had wondered where in the state Corinth was located, thanks!
