What do the Knights need to do to be successful in 2014?

My opinion, they need to bolster their O-line and D-line. They have some great ones returning ie. Bailey, Carpenter, Castlen but they need depth on both side. From what I heard, they will be getting some experience linemen that were out for the season last year due to season ending injuries. The skills position will be just a good as last season ie. Letton, Ryan, the return of Jalen Jones and on defense, Boling, Mitchell and a handful of underclassmen that played or even started last season. Prediction? IMO another state semi-finalist.

Good news on the O-line is that the Knights bring back 5 guys who started games last season. I think Woodford Lankford can help add depth as a sophomore, big kid.

Replacing David Bouvier at WR isn't going to happen with one kid but I think Donovan Morris, JJ Ogbogu, and Jordan Hatton have the potential to step and make it not too big of a loss.

Jaylen Jones coming back from injury, as well as senior to be Carter Grey who averaged 10 ypc last, will ease the loss of 2 D-1 running backs.

Everyone knows how good Reese Ryan is, he will have a huge year.

I thought Marty Brown graduated on the O-line? If so only 4 returning O-line right, plus not to mentioned Lankford is a beast at 6'3 260lbs and only a sophomore. Other linemen that will contribute Strohman, Pedriche ( out last season with injury ), Strohman, Middleton and the Drew boys. I think they are 3 players witht the Drew. All have size and very athletic. Should add tons of talent and better as far as depth. Excited to see this group. Hey Knights, have any idea on their schedule? I know you have the inside scope. Hahaha

Chase Bowling rotated every other series with Brown so I counted him as a starter, a little bit of cheating on my part.

In terms of the schedule everyone flips besides the first two games since they were bowl games. I believe Bowling Green will be their opponent for the Bluegrass Bowl, no clue who will be the first game

Technically you did not cheat. I believe Chase started the Madison Central game when Marty was out with injury.

Well looks like I was right then, I'll take that any time I can get it!:lol2:

IMO that Bowling kid, his calling card will be on the defensive ILB spot. He has the size, instinct, toughness to plug and fill in the gaps. Those other linemen I mentioned before will fill in the other guard spot and the rest will rotate on the defensive side. Whatcha all think?

What the Knights will need to do is embrace their new coach and the changes he will bring. That is key for 2014.

The line's are in better shape going into 2014 than most previous years.

The WRs will need reloading. Expect Donovan Morris to get more opportunity in these slots.

RB duties will need some reloading. Carter Gray will likely start at the F. Its the H back slot that will need work. Gray is a pounder like Noah Mitchell and gets a good number of yards after contact. But not sure who fills the H with anything near the speed of Logan.

CBs are a full reload. Expect interception specialist Davis Rowdy (6 picks as a backup in 2013) to get one of those slots. Andy Hickey may also be in that position, but Andy may fill the open safety position or be a WR. He can play a lot of places.

Hopefully Sam Letton stays. He and Ryan are uncanny in in the passing game. Even with Sam, Ryan will have to build some confidence in the new RBs and WRs.

OriginalQuestion- What does LC need to do to be successful in 2014? IMO- Offense will be a lethal as ever with an experienced line, an experienced Quarterback and talented running backs and receivers. Area of improvement- Cut down on turnovers. Defense- Should be pretty good this year with a lot of talented players returning but do lose Marty Brown and Josh Mesmer. Two great leaders. Area of Improvement- Pass defense and who is going to emerge as the leader for the defense this year? Biggest of area I see for improvement is in the Kicking game. It doesn't do any good to score and then have the other team run the Kickoff back. Having said all of that I see a pretty solid team. Too early to make a prediction until after Spring Ball because of Coaching change but I am leaning on trip to Bowling Green in December.

Well said. A lot of talent lost on the defensive side, but from what I watch, there are plenty of underclassmen talent ( ie. Hickey, Rowady, Morris, JJ Ogebu, Jalen JOnes ) who are ready to step in the get their feet wet. I observed a few freshman last season that played JV and was really impressed with their talent. One player ( not sure of name ) played the H, F, WR and LB. And that Foster kid has some talent. Don't be surprise if any or all those freshman talent will find their way in the starling line up or play significant time on the field.

I personally wonder what they do with Andy Thompson. On the JV level he looked like Johnny Football at QB. Question to me is whether he is too valuable as the backup QB or do you put him out on the field at maybe that H spot? I lean towards playing him because he is just so talented.

Who was #35 in the secondary? Is he returning?

No, Travis Hayden #35 was a senior. His little brother Zach will be a junior though

There was another lineman that played early in season but got injured and was out most of the season. He was a transfer from St. X . don't remember his name but I think he played defensive tackle. Anybody remember?
