Randy Parker Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) 2014 10th Region Region Tournament Preview For a second straight year Mason County's illustrious Fieldhouse will be the site for the 10th Region Tournament. Defending champ Montgomery County enters this year's tourney with the favorite label, though the Indians seem to be less dominant than they were a year ago. Both 37th District representatives, Campbell County and Bishop Brossart, are legitimate threats to unseat MoCo as is Larry Kendall's Harrison County squad. George Rogers Clark has proven capable of hanging with Montgomery and Augusta enters with a boatload of momentum and excitement. Bracken County and Robertson County give the field a Class "A" flavor, making this two straight tournaments where 50% of the participants are small schools. The Pairings Thursday, March 6th (6:00 pm) - Campbell County vs. Bracken County Thursday, March 6th (7:30 pm) - Harrison County vs. George Rogers Clark Friday, March 7th (6:00 pm) - Montgomery County vs. Bishop Brossart Friday, March 7th (7:30 pm) - Augusta vs. Robertson County Monday, March 10th (6:00 pm) - Semi-Final #1 Monday, March 10th (7:30 pm) - Semi-Final #2 Tuesday, March 11th (7:00 pm) - Championship Game The Teams Campbell County Camels Head Coach: Aric Russell Record: 18-8 (37th District Champions) Probable Starters: Trent McGovney - 5'10" Soph./ Blake Losey - 5'11" Jr./ Corey Holbrook - 5'11" Sr./ Matt Wilson - 6'6" Soph./ Deandre Jackson - 6'2" Jr. The Camels 1-2-3 punch of Deandre Jackson (18.6 ppg), Corey Holbrook (15.7 ppg), and Matt Wilson (13.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg) can be quite intimidating. The smooth-operating Jackson is a quality combo guard who has been the 10th's best non-senior player in 2013-14. Holbrook is as tough as they come and was huge in Campbell's 37th District title run, earning MVP honors. Wilson has averaged a double-double this year and has made tremendous strides all season long. Consistency has been an issue for the Camels, but when this team is clicking they are a threat to cut down nets. Bracken County Polar Bears Head Coach: Chad Persinger Record: 14-15 (39th District Runner-Up) Probable Starters: Austin Crawford - 6'1" Fr./ Nate Haight - 5'11" Sr./ Ryan May - 6'2" Sr./ Steven Cummins - 6'1" Sr./ Jacob Hamilton - 6'0 Fr. The Polar Bears are making their second straight trip to the Regional Tournament and they bring an odd mixture of experience and youth. Three starters and the first player off the bench are all seniors, but the team's top player--and the 10th Region's #2 scorer (23.6 ppg)--is 6'1" freshman guard Austin Crawford. Crawford is a sight to see with his ball-handling skills, athleticism, and ability to get to the basket and finish using either hand. Another freshman, Jacob Hamilton, has been strong this season and played well in the 39th District Tournament. Bracken County lacks in the size department and there is little depth, but this is a team that cannot be counted out simply because of Crawford's presence. Harrison County Thorobreds Head Coach: Larry Kendall Record: 14-16 (38th District Champions) Probable Starters: D.J. Jenkins - 6'2" Jr./ Grant Carr - 6'1" Sr./ Trenton Thompson - 6'4" Jr./ Mason Ritchie - 6'3" Sr./ Dillon Pulliam - 6'3" Sr. The Breds enter the Regional Tournament playing pretty good basketball. While they have but a .500 record in February (4-4), the losses have not been bad ones--5 point and 2 point losses to state-ranked Holmes and Collins, another 2 point loss to Campbell County, and a 9 point road blemish against Region favorite Montgomery County. Harrison County brings a balanced attack, but three players stand out on the roster: Jenkins, Thompson, and Dillon Pulliam. The trio led Harrison to a convincing win of the 38th District Tournament and will look to take the team to even greater heights. And keep an eye on Zack Pulliam, the 6'4" sophomore swingman and younger brother of Dillon, who can provide a jolt off the bench. Like other squads in this field the Breds have battled consistency issues, but the schedule should have them battle tested and ready for a deep run. George Rogers Clark Cardinals Head Coach: Scott Humphrey Record: 9-19 (40th District Runner-Up) Probable Starters: Josiah Israel - 5'7" Soph./ Damion King - 5'9" Jr./ Khmarkis Blanton - 6'3" Sr./ Jerryd Jones - 6'3" Fr./ Luke Sharrock - 6'0" Jr. The Cardinals utilize a variety of starting lineups, so take the above with a grain of salt. Scott Humphrey's team does not have the record it would like, but the Cards stay in games with their defensive abilities. Scoring, however, has been an issue both last year and this. GRC regularly experiences scoring droughts that even superior defense cannot overcome. Damion King has been the team's MVP despite his small stature and big man Khmarkis Blanton can dominate the paint for long stretches. Freshman forward Jerryd Jones has shown flashes of excellence and senior Riley Caudill played a highly important role in the 40th District Tournament. On paper the Cards don't seem to be a title threat, but twice they have given the Tournament favorites everything they wanted and then some. Overlook this team at your own peril. Montgomery County Indians Head Coach: Jason Holland Record: 27-2 (40th District Champions) Probable Starters: Bryan Wallace - 6'0 Sr./ Blake Thomas - 6'0 Sr./ DeAnte Cisero - 6'6" Sr./ Darius Jones - 6'5" Sr./ Xavier Piersawl - 6'2" Sr. The Indians are the most talented team and boast the best starting unit in the 10th Region, which explains why they've headlined Regional rankings since the season's outset. And while MoCo sports a 27-2 record, the general consensus seems to be that the defending Region champs are vulnerable. The Indians required an Art Walker 3-pointer in the final seconds to put away GRC in the District Championship--one of many games where the Indians have struggled with an opponent they outmatched. Having said that, Wallace is an outstanding guard and the forward combination of Cisero and Jones possess superior athleticism. Montgomery is the favorite to retain the 10th's crown, but the field isn't as far behind as it was a season ago. Bishop Brossart Mustangs Head Coach: Mike Code Record: 23-4 (37th District Runner-Up) Probable Starters: Jake Jennings - 5'10" Sr./ Spencer Hackworth - 6'1" Jr./ Erik Rieger - 6'3" Sr./ Drew Burns - 6'7" Sr./ Alex Trentman - 6'7" Sr. The Mustangs lost their first game within the Region in the 37th Title game and Code will no doubt use that loss to light a fire under his team. For the Stangs, it starts in the front court with the dynamite duo of Alex Trentman (19.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg) and Drew Burns (13.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg). Trentman might be the best player in the 10th not named Bach and Burns might be the 10th's best true center. Ball-hawking point guard Jennings is just coming back from injury and swing player Erik Rieger does a lot of things well for Brossart. Lack of depth and frequent foul problems have been issues for the Mustangs, but this is the roster best built to dethrone Montgomery County. Augusta Panthers Head Coach: Jason Hinson Record: 19-11 (39th District Champions) Probable Starters: Owens Crawford - 6'0 Soph./ Connor Maddox - 5'11" Soph./ Brent Bach - 6'1" Sr./ Camryn Snapp - 6'3" Soph./ Dustin Freeman - 6'0 Sr. The Panthers made a statewide splash yet again in the 39th District Tournament by upsetting Mason County. Brent Bach's historic performance of 48 points was enough to catapult Augusta into the finals, where they ultimately repeated as District champs. Bach, the 10th Region Player of the Year, averages 30.9 ppg and hopes to continue the post-season magic in the Regional Tournament. The senior standout was a one-man wrecking crew against Mason County, but the Panthers are much better when sophomores Camryn Snapp and Connor Maddox are making significant contributions. Hinson's team is undersized, but has weathered a mid-season slump and appears ready to give its loyal fan following a March to remember. Robertson County Black Devils Head Coach: John Brown Record: 15-13 (38th District Runner-Up) Probable Starters: Tyler Burns - 5'9" Sr./ Dawson Cooper - 6'2" Jr./ Darren Edwards - 6'3" Sr./ Justin Pilosky - 6'2" Sr./ Myles Murphy - 6'0 Fr. The Black Devils enter the Region Tournament with a 15-13 record, but 13 of those wins were earned in January and February. John Brown's club finished runner-up in the 10th Region Class "A" Tournament as well as last week's 38th District Tournament, so they're familiar with tournament success. Four players do most of the offensive damage, led by junior guard Dawson Cooper. Tyler Burns is a steady and experienced point guard, but it was the forward tandem of Edwards and Pilosky that shined brightest in the District by earning All-Tournament Team honors. A very small school, Robertson County is just happy to be in the field, but rest assured they will not be content to just show up. polarbear98 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I took this from my thread from the other day: My thoughts are as follows Campbell 75 Bracken 62 too much size GRC 60 Harrison 54 defense is the key here Brossart 68 MoCo 64. Great game that could go eithier way Augusta 80 Robertson 66. Bach and company dominate GRC 65 Campbell 55. Again Defense Brossart 72 Augusta 62. Brossart bigs dominate Brossart 59 GRC 50 Brossart too much for the cards. Honestly I feel the winner of Brossart MoCo will win the region. I picked with my head this time as I believe this is how it will go down. Would love to see some upsets but I don't feel that is going to be on the menu. Bracken over Campbell would make my week. But I doubt that happens
Mattitude Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Campbell beats Bracken by 17 Harrison beats Clark by 8 Montgomery beats Brossart by 7 Augusta beats Robertson by 12 Campbell beats Harrison by 7 Montgomery beats Augusta by 19 Montgomery beats Campbell by 8

dd734 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 As always, Go Camels!!!!!! The Camels need to put 4 good quarters together. I don't believe they will fare well allowing their opponents to get double digit+ leads at this point in the season, as well they need to continue weak side rebounding. That being said, they can play with anyone in the 10th on any given night.
