Frosh baseball for the most part is really bad, it is like watching a knothole game. So your telling me it is better for an 8th grader to play frosh baseball than to go play in a Super NIT or a tournament at East Cobb?

 

Nah what I am telling you is the seasons do not run at the same time. To say a kid is better off sitting out the spring season and then playing summer select ball is just wrong. Most High Schools have good programs with intense practices and the kids get better especially at the 8th grade level. The good players play nearly year round. Just see no reason a kid would be better off not playing in the spring.

If I'm not mistaken, Harrison County won a State Championship with a 12 year old starting. After the State Championship, he came back and finished his Little League Season.

Not true, most 7th & 8th graders are better off playing select ball in the Spring with their select teams. There are some high schools that have have decent Frosh teams/programs but not many. If you are a really good player and have a really good select team/organization, i.e. Midland, Flames etc. you're better off playing the Spring & Summer with your select team.

I did not realize there were any seasons running concurent with High School Baseball. Since the majority of the players will play for their High School I would think they would have trouble getting quality players at that time. We have kids playing for Midland, Ky Colonels, ATY Roosters etc and they all start after High School ball is over. What leagues play in the spring?

There is good freshman baseball and bad freshman ball....no great. For the most part, the best freshman will be already playing varsity ball (or JV Ball at the very least). It certainly doesn't equate to top level select ball, but the very good freshman teams can compete at the mid level of the select teams. That being said I have had the pleasure of watching some truly horrible freshman baseball games that if they hadn't been played on a baseball field would not have been recognizable as baseball.

The only team in the Greater Cincinnati area that fields really good frosh teams year after year is Moeller. If you are not a National League SWOL type player you might as well not even tryout..

SWOL National League

Search 13u or 14u baseball tournaments by state, they are everywhere. Plus teams start scheduling their SWOL games very early. My son played week day games for one team, tournaments on the weekends for Midland until high school ball was over where he played on his regular summer team in 8th grade.

I'm in Louisville but the travel teams start playing in the summer at 15u. There are many 8th graders who are 14 who play travel ball but also play in a middle school league. It is definitely not as competitive but lets you play with future teammates. The only schools in Louisville that are allowed to play 8th graders on a freshman team are private schools like CAL, KCD, and others.

When I say very good, I'm not talking about SWOL National "good". More like SWOL American. If you're playing SWOL National in NKY, you're probably not playing freshman ball.

I think most kids look forward to playing High School ball for their school. It has more to do with pride. I think 8th graders who make the cut for the freshman team are usually pumped about the coming season. It definitely varies from school to school and some schools have much more competitive players and teams.

My boy played Freshman ball last year as an 8th grader. He started almost all of the games. That is a memory he can keep the rest of his life. Since the coaches have already seen how he can play , they said he will be playing some JV this year.

All I am trying to say is that if your kid is a high level player as an 8th grader, you are way better off playing on your SWOL National team or your tournament only team..The competition is a ton better than playing on a frosh baseball team. It is not even close between the two..
