Surprised not to see Jaynice Stovall for Holmes since she had the most impact on the team as a freshman. Coach Tony Perkins of Holmes not Coach of the Year with what he did with a team that only had Senior Deena Kilburn with major varsity experience everyone else basicaly no varsity experience which had not had a winning season in years also with a victory over Notre Dame who they had not beat since 2005. Wow what a joke!!

Wow what a joke!! To be fair Holmes is a #4 seed in their district while Highlands is a #1 seed in a district that had the team ranked #1 for most of the year in it. So while the Holmes coach has done a great job and Coach of the Year is kind of meaningless (especially for the regular season) I can see how the Highlands coach got the nod.
paNDA Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Congrats to all the winners! The true prize lies ahead so enjoy and prepare to take your team to the top.
gobigblue9 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Congrats to all the girls. But this should be on 9th region only.
max Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 What is up with that? It is the Northern Kentucky Coaches Association not the Ninth Region.
cougarbball4and11 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 The NKAC and Coaches association is made up of teams in the 8th, 9th and 10th regions.

So while the Holmes coach has done a great job and Coach of the Year is kind of meaningless (especially for the regular season) I can see how the Highlands coach got the nod. Also, HHS graduated 6 seniors last year and start 3 sophs and 2 juniors with a 7th grader as their 6th man and a freshman in their top 8. They could have very easily been .500 this year with the schedule they play. But outside of two games that I feel got away from them, they beat everyone except a few big dogs and even got a couple of them along the way. I think it was a great year for them. Yes, the bulldogs are improving and that coach has reinvented the girls program at Holmes, but I think Jaime gets the nod this year as well.

Holmes graduated six seniors as well and start a freshman , 8 grader, 2 soph and a senior with a new system and also beat Highlands which generally is a powerful girls team. Jaime is a good coach who has had good teams for awhile only 2005/2006 season was a losing season prior but the Holmes team did have to learn a totally new system also with new players that had not played together. Also had only two winning seasons since 2008 so it is clear that Coach Perkins has done something that had not been done in a while. So as far as I'm concerned it sounds like a popularity contest instead of a coach improving a program into playing better.

So as far as I'm concerned it sounds like a popularity contest instead of a coach improving a program into playing better. We are splitting hairs, but I wouldn't say a coach of the year is who improved a program more. I think that's a part of it, but not the lone factor. I think it's who had the results and did more with less...at least that's what I feel it should be. Holmes has a VERY strong case, I agree with you 100%! And yes they beat HHS on a last second banked in 3 pointer, you're right. But that is one of the games that I think HHS would like to have back. I know my daughter felt they let that one slip away. I didn't see it because I was traveling for business. But I'll take her word for it. But I do think that the "results" might have been the difference maker in this decision, not a popularity contest. Jaime took a similar team to the district 1 seed in the district that had the number 1 ranked team in the region. Holmes ended up with the 4 seed in their district. Holmes did improve drastically and they did do a lot with less experienced players, but the placement in the district would be hard to overcome. If Holmes coach were to win the COY, would there be more arguement about awarding the COY to a coach that finished last in their district? I'm not saying that to cause problems, I'm just saying, how could they justify awarding a COY to the guy that finished last. Again, I like what's going on over there. I think he's doing a great job. And I love Janiece. I got to coach her a little when she was younger. And I like the support you are giving them. But I just think he was probably edged out by where they ended in the district. If they get out of the district, they are definitely a team that will put a scare into some teams in the regional tournament. They will also be a top team for the next couple years.
frankdracman23 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 As I stated previously, Coach of the Year is somewhat meaningless because no one knows what the criteria is. Is it the Coach that did the most with the least? Is it the Coach that had a team that won the most games? (And this goes from Girls High School Basketball to the NBA). I wish they would not even name a Coach of the Year and just honor the players.
Clyde Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 D2 is tough for COY. I'd probably lean towards Dick Maile.
Guest e.mt2005 Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I agree with Owings and Kiernan for DI & DII but DIII is Hengge. When Villa & Bellevue went head to head Hengge stats were better than Ross, not to mention the 2nd time they played Hengge scored 30 points, once short of matching what Bellevue scored (Villa won 50-31). Hengge dominated when Villa needed the win for their conference championship. Also coach of the year should be Shields. He basically only had one starter returning and was able to pull what he had together to only lose one game in the conference and to win DIII title.
