Danville 2014

I think following Sam Harp would be similar to following Joe Paterno. When you follow someone that Wins, you must not put that Coach down. I do not think Coach Clevenger has done this. As you may remember the Coach that was making millions following Paterno actually blew a gasket on National TV about this situation. Give the new Coach time and I think he we be a great one. As I remember with numbers if you have 19 players on the team that can play then you would have 8 more than a team with 50 that only 11 that could play.

Danville has always been solid they won state titles in 1962,1984,1987,1989,1991,1992,1994,2000,2001,and 2003.I do think there was a problem with Danville's staff during Harps last 6 or 7 years you could tell it by there play on the field during games. I've been told by several long time Danville supporters that one coach caused a lot of problems, but I'll not call any names. I maybe wrong but I don't think Clevenger is gonna be their savior. I guess time will tell. I do miss them being competitive like they once were their rivalry with Boyle isn't what it use to be.

At one time, the staff was as good as anyone's in the state (with veterans and "new" guys that could coach their butts off). Time will tell if Clevenger can put together a top-knotch staff and not just have former players roaming the sidelines with him.

This is problematic... Don't think it is wise to take a HC job if you cannot already have that in place, IMO. One of the reasons a lot of "searches" don't work out -- you need assistants in the building.

Danville is Danville. They will always have men that can play. Much like Highlands they just re-load, and Danville is a school the size 2A where SPEED does matter. It amazes me when a new Coach comes in and everyone second guesses everything. So that being sad give this guy a chance on all those that are willing to step up a chance.

The coaches did a good job this year. Unlike others I feel the coaches did a good job in prior years as well. A lot of people just need to face facts about what Danville is right now and quit living in the past. They will cycle back. The question is when.

Talent is down for sure. Assistants have little to no experience. If/when those things change they might make another run.

Cats, do not get your fur up. What I am saying is that most of the Private Schools do not have down years. The incentives have been dried up. It used to be that they could offer some stipend to cover cost of tuition, but this is not allowed anymore. I am thankful for people like Jim McKee that has endured this and others in 6A, because you know that everyone should have a down year or two. This is the reason that in every state but ours that Public and Private do not compete for the same championship. Just an opinion.

Outside of class 1A in Georgia, they compete for the same state championship in Georgia and Alabama.

Yep they sure do.

We can't let facts get in the way of a good opinion, but states that have separate classes for privates are the MINORITY.

Having followed Danville football for two decades, what they really need is a quarterback that can throw. Danville is way too one dimensional and predictable on offense and the last good quarterback they had was Adam Schott and that was during their 2001-2003 stetch.

Schott graduated in 03, senior season was 02.

In 2003 Danville beat Beechwood by 40 I think and had right at or a little over 500 yds offense.

.....all rushing. They threw it one time and I think it was intercepted.

Right. I was thinking of his graduation year than the year he played his last season. That 2003 team did have an offensive-heavy attack, but you had Charles Penix and Kelvin Turner manning that attack and were arguably the best 1-2 combo in the state at the time. That team nearly lost in the Regional Final to Louisville Holy Cross, who decided to go for it on 4th down in the closing minutes of that game instead of punting the ball away.

All I'm saying is that it wouldn't hurt Danville to vary its offense a little, but I know this is dependent on getting a kid that has an arm/build to be a good quarterback and those things are sometimes outside of the coach's hands.

Danville had a good run to close last season and I really think if they had gotten out of Prestonsburg with a win that they might've made a run to the state final.
