coldweatherfan Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Jim Beam being acquired by Japan?s Suntory | Daily Journal NEW YORK – The maker of classic American whiskeys Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark has agreed to be acquired by a Japanese company in a $13.62 billion deal that would create the third largest global premium spirits business.
Jim Schue Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Old news. Plus, most of Ky's Bourbon is foreign-owned. Exceptions: Heaven Hill and Willett locally in Bardstown. I think Woodford Reserve also is, but I could be wrong. Beam, Maker's, Four Roses are all foreign-owned and have been for a long time. In other words, the outrage ship sailed decades ago and none of us were on it.
coldweatherfan Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Who said anything about outrage. I hadn't seen it posted, so I posted it.
Bluegrasscard Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Jim Beam was owned by Chicago-based Fortune Brands until it was spun off a couple of years ago. A buyout like this is probably what the Fortune Brands thought would happen when Beam went independent.
Jim Schue Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Who said anything about outrage. I hadn't seen it posted, so I posted it. When this first went into the news cycle a month or so ago Facebook was lit up with people outraged at the thought of the Japanese buying their "All-American" Bourbon. Seemed like this was more of the same. For the record, Jim Beam is terrible. They can have it, for all I care. Besides, the jobs are still in Ky. Can't make Bourbon in Japan.

I think they own Blanton's also. Woodford Reserved I believe is owned by Brown Forman. Brown Forman has another bourbon but I cannot think of the name. Guru likes Benchmark Bourbon, I cannot think who owns the brand, maybe the same as owns Buffalo Trace??? I believe Pappy is US owned also.
Bert Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 If memory serves correct, Makers was sold by the Samuels family to a holding company that eventually became Allied Dolmec (something like that) out of England. The sold the brand to Fortune I believe.
Jim Schue Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 #1 selling bourbon in the world. Must not be that bad. A good advertising campaign doesn't make good Bourbon.

Pappy is distilled at Buffalo Trace.
LIPTON BASH Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 A good advertising campaign doesn't make good Bourbon. I don't mind beam as a mixer. But I agree I'm not putting it on rocks and sipping on it.
jahearme Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 A good advertising campaign doesn't make good Bourbon. True. My wife says thanks for the compliment.
Jim Schue Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Booker's isn't. Lone exception. It's still rough as a sipping whiskey — needs some ice/water to cut the proof.

Isn't Booker's part of the Beam Small Batch collection with Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, Bakers an maybe another one? I believe you are correct, that Bookers has the strongest proof.
