I am having an argument with a friend of mine and I need an answer. Nothing unusual about us arguing because we disagree on everything. He knows everything and I don't know anything at all according to him.

Are high school athletes allowed by the KHSAA to ride in cars to athletic events? Do they have to ride buses?

Is it a violation for them to ride cars?

THANKS

Up to the counties. Kenton County requires bus. Boone County does not.

No it is not a KHSAA violation to ride in cars. Some public schools systems may have rules around how athletes are transported but no KHSAA rules. Many private schools do not even have buses and parents or older students are the only drivers to an event.

I think it is a school by school thing. The KHSAA is not involved.

Many schools use buses for long-distance trips, but have the players meet at the game site if it is within the county or area in which they live.

It is certainly not a violation to use private transportation.

There's no perceived reward or benefit gained by a player from being transported to & from games, thus the KHSAA doesn't care how he or she gets to & from the game(s). The school system under which the team the player plays for cares only because there is a question of liability & safety and the coach cars because he wants to make sure they're all at the game when they're supposed to be.

"Back in the day" almost everybody got to & from games via whatever private transportation could be organized by volunteers in the community (I transported a majority of my school's varsity basketball team in my 12-passenger van), but as our society became more & more litigious, that began coming to an end and now the vast majority of school transport their student-athletes via school bus or other school-organized means.

Some school systems allow their student-athletes to ride home with their parents/family after the game, but the student-athlete must ride on the bus going to the game. I suppose in that case it is tied more to making sure the players arrive at the athletic activity on a timely basis - and I'd guess the parents/family probably sign a waiver of liability in order to be able to bring their son or daughter back home (or where ever they're going).
