1921 With the jurors lifting the men onto their shoulders, the eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series are acquitted by the jury. The next day, Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis* will say the overwhelming evidence clearly shows the Black Sox fixed the games with gamblers and all involved will be banned from playing professional baseball again. *We could have used this guy as a commish now.

 

1938 As an experiment, bright yellow baseballs are used in the first game of a doubleheader. The teams go back to the traditional white ball in the nightcap as the Dodgers swept the twin bill from the Cardinals, 6-2 and 9-3.

 

1979 At the age of 32, Yankee catcher Thurman Munson is killed when the plane he is learning to fly crashes 1,000 feet short of the runway at Canton-Akron Airport.

 

1985 White Sox backstop Carlton Fisk tags out two Yankee runners at home plate during the same play. The unusual 8-6-2-2 double play results as both Bobby Meacham and Dale Berra try to score on Rickey Henderson's double in the gap.

 

1987 Reds' outfielder Eric Davis becomes the seventh player to join the 30-30 club as he homers in the 5-4 victory over the Giants. No one had ever accomplished the feat with still nearly two months left to play in the season.

1948 Ernie Harwell, filling in for Red Barber who is recovering from a bleeding ulcer, calls his first major league game as the Dodgers beat the Cubs at Ebbets Field, 5-4. To obtain the future Hall of Fame broadcaster, Brooklyn general manager Branch Rickey trades minor league catcher Cliff Daper to the Atlanta Crackers.

 

1982 After driving in the winning run in a Met 7-4 victory over the Cubs, Joel Youngblood is traded and later in the day flies to Philadelphia and singles for the Expos becoming the first player to have a hit for two different teams in the same day in different cities.

 

1985 At the Yankee Stadium, White Sox Tom Seaver becomes the 17th player in major league history to win 300 games as he six-hits the Bronx Bombers, 4-1. All of the Yankees' hits are singles.

 

1985 Rod Carew of the Angels singles off of Twin Frank Viola in the third inning to become the 16th major leaguer to amass 3000 hits.

1889 1889 At the Seventh Street Park in Indianapolis, future 300 game winner Mickey Welch becomes the first pinch hitter in major league history. Although the Giants right-handed pitcher strikes out in his historic plate appearance, New York prevails beating the Hoosiers, 9-6.

 

1969 For the second time this season, Twins' Cesar Tovar breaks up a no-hit bid by an Oriole pitcher by singling in the ninth inning. Mike Cuellar is the victim this time.

 

1971 At Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis, Harmon Killebrew becomes the tenth player to join the 500 home run club as hits the historic homer in the first inning off Mike Cuellar. Later in the game the 36-year old first baseman connects for #501, but 'Killer's' two round-trippers are to no avail as the Twins lose to the Orioles in 10 innings, 4-3.

 

1971 At San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, Juan Marichal records his 50th career shutout as the Giants blank the Expos, 1-0. The Dominican hurler's ninth inning double helps to build the winning run.

 

1974 Jorge Lebron, the youngest professional player ever, makes his debut for the Phillies farm club Auburn. The fourteen-year old shortstop plays three games before returning to Puerto Rico to finish junior high school.
