1982 Brewer reliever Rollie Fingers become the first player in major league history to record 300 career saves as Milwaukee defeat the Mariners, 3-2.

 

2002 In longest game ever played in Little League World Series history, Louisville, Kentucky beats Fort Worth, Texas in the US semifinal in 11 innings, 2-1. A record-setting with 49 strikeouts is recorded as Fort Worth's Walker Kelly strikes out 21 in nine two-hit innings and Louisville's Aaron Alvey fans 19 batter over nine no-hit inning.

 

2005 Florida suspends their bat boy for six games after the 11-year old accepts former Marlin and current Dodger hurler Brad Penny’s $500 dare to drink a gallon of milk in less than an hour without throwing up. The sixth grader, who is able to drink the quantity in the allotted time but cannot keep it down, will be offered by the Milk Processor Education Program a promise to pay off the dare and will cover the lost wages resulting from the suspension if he agrees to drink three glasses every 24 hours.

1886 Louisville's Chicken Wolf hits a game-winning home run thanks to a stray dog tearing at Reds' Abner Powell's pant leg causing the center fielder to miss the ball. *Great baseball name and probably something that will never happen again. *

 

1939 At Comiskey Park, the Yankees win their first night game in franchise history as the Bronx Bombers defeat the White Sox, 14-5.

 

1961 Roger Maris, in his record-setting season, becomes the first player to hit his 50th home run in the month of August. The 26-year old all-star outfielder connects off Ken McBride as the Yankees lose to the Angels, 4-3.

 

1984 By striking out nine Padres, Met phenom 19-year old Dwight Gooden becomes the 11th rookie to strike out 200 batters in a season.

 

1989 On a 96 mph fastball, A's Rickey Henderson swing and misses to become Nolan Ryan's career 5000th strikeout. The 'Ryan Express' strikes out 13 and gives up only five hits, but loses the game to Oakland, 2-0.

 

2000 Reds' outfielder Alex Ochoa helps to set a major league record by hitting the 142nd grand slam of the season. The Cincinnati’s outfielder first career bases-full homer eclipses the previous mark of 141 grand slams established in 1996.

1936 The Indians' seventeen-year-old rookie pitcher, Bob Feller makes his first major league start striking out the first eight batters he faces. 'Rapid Robert' will finish the game with 15 strikeouts as Cleveland beats the Browns, 4-1.

 

1952 Bob Elliot of the Giants is tossed from the Cardinal game for protesting a strike two call and his replacement, Bobby Hoffman, is also thrown out for arguing the third strike of the same at-bat.

 

1958 In a 10-1 win over Milwaukee, Gil Hodges hits his 14th career grand slam to established a new National League record.

 

1961 Five Giants (Cepeda, F. Alou, Davenport, Mays & Orsino) hit homers in the same inning tying a major league record in a 14-0 rout of the Reds.
