Montgomery goes 3-0, becomes first team to beat Wayne

After some lackluster performances in their previous three games, Jason Holland's Indians were impressive in three wins this past week. On Thursday night Bryan Wallace scored 17 points & dished out 8 assists as MoCo rolled past visiting Augusta 89-59. Two nights later the Indians put a similar pounding during a visit to North Hardin, coming home with an 86-60 win. But the icing on the cake was undoubtedly Montgomery's home win over Kentucky's only unbeaten team: Wayne County. The 10th ranked team in the state had to battle from behind to tie the game at the half, but the Indians came out clicking in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the visitors 25-14 & eventually holding on for an 81-72 triumph. Wallace led MoCo with a game-high 27 points, while DeAnte Cisero finished with 16, Darius Jones with 12, & Blake Thomas with 11.

Mason County continues to impress

The Royals stayed within the Region last week & rolled to victory both times. The Campbell County Camels came to The Fieldhouse on Thursday & Mason dealt them an 80-66 defeat. Shawn Johnson led the Royals with 18 points & 9 rebounds. Dorian Henry contributed 17 points & 4 rebounds. Guards Lukas Greenhill & Antwavon Williams both chipped in 14 points. The next night Chris O'Hearn took his team to Winchester & notched a 55-44 win over George Rogers Clark. Henry continued to shine, finishing with 21 points & 6 rebounds on 9-12 FG shooting. Williams was the only other Royals player in double figures with 11.

Robertson County wins 3 in 3 days

John Brown's resurgent Black Devils continued to roll last week in three consecutive outings. First up was a Thursday night 38th District tilt at Pendleton County. The host Wildcats led much of the way & were ahead by 5 points with 1:12 remaining, but Robertson County finished strong. With the Devils down 2, junior guard Dawson Cooper dribbled the length of the floor for a score to tie it & then after a defensive stop, Cooper again scored in the closing seconds, giving his team a 49-47 victory. Cooper & senior teammate Justin Pilosky both scored 14 in the win. Robertson then hosted 16th Region foe Menifee County on Friday & came out sluggish, scoring only 6 points in both the 1st & 2nd quarters & trailed 19-12 at the half. But the Black Devils came out hot in the 2nd half, scoring 43 points in the half to come away with a convincing 55-40 victory. Senior guard Tyler Burns led Robertson with 19 points, while Cooper added 12 & senior forward Darren Edwards had 11. Saturday was a road trip to St. Francis, where Brown's club fell behind 14-11 after quarter #1, but then outscored the Wyverns 39-16 in quarters 2 & 3 en route to a 65-54 win. Cooper was strong yet again, finishing with a game-high 23 points. Three other Black Devils were in double figures--Edwards (14), Burns (12), & Pilosky (10). Since the calendar turned to 2014 Robertson County is 9-1 (11-9 for the season), with the only loss coming in the Class "A" title game to Bishop Brossart.

Scott sees mixed results against pair of 9th Region foes

The Eagles battled a pair of 9th Region teams last week, starting with a Monday night visit to Holmes. Scott kept things interesting for a half against the state's 9th ranked team, trailing only 41-30 at intermission. But the second half was a reversal of fortune, as the Bulldogs poured in 47 points to Scott's 19, ending with an 88-49 final. Only one Eagles player earned double figures--freshman guard Jake Ohmer who had 10. On Friday, though, Brad Carr's squad produced one of it's finest offensive performances of the year in taking out visiting Conner 87-72. Blake Schneider was outstanding in scoring a game-high 31 points, while also dishing out 5 assists. Sophomore guard Andrew Trame had 14, while Kameron Crim, Jeremy Jackson, & Ohmer each pitched in 12.

Campbell falls at Mason, but comes back to beat Harrison

Campbell County entered Thursday night's game at Mason County winners of 5 straight & was neck-and-neck with the Royals for hottest team in the 10th. But Aric Russell's team left Maysville brought back down to earth by a balanced Royals attack. In the 80-66 loss, Campbell was led by junior guard Dre Jackson's 21 points. Corey Holbrook added 14, Luke Franzen 12, & Blake Losey 11. On Saturday night Campbell County took to the road again, this time visiting Larry Kendall's Harrison County Thorobreds. The Breds jumped out quick & rolled up an 18-point halftime lead, but the Camels stormed back in the 2nd half & ended up winning the game 63-61 on a basket by center Matt Wilson in the final seconds. Wilson finished the game with 12 points, but Jackson again paced Campbell with 23 points. Holbrook also contributed 10 points in the come-from-behind win.

Mustangs fall to NewCath

Bishop Brossart's only game last week was likely its toughest to date--a Friday night road contest with 7th ranked Newport Central Catholic. For three quarters Mike Code's boys made a serious run at the 'Breds, but the 4th quarter was a killer. The 'Stangs were held to just 4 points in the final eight minutes, while NewCath tallied 18 & came away with a 64-44 win. The Brossart bigs produced 31 of the teams 44 points, as Drew Burns pumped in 19 & Alex Trentman finished with 12. The game marked Brossart's second straight loss. The last time the 'Stangs lost two straight was December of 2012.

Panthers fall in both outings

Augusta faced a couple of tough road trips last week, beginning with the aforementioned 89-59 loss at Montgomery County. The depth of the Indians was too much for Jason Hinson's bunch, despite a game-high 36 points from senior guard Brent Bach. Saturday saw the Panthers travel to Lafayette for a battle with Dunbar in the Jock Sutherland Classic. Augusta led most of the way, but a 9-0 Bulldogs run put the Panthers down 55-48 with 2 minutes to play. Augusta scored six straight to cut the deficit back to 1 point, but Dunbar edged back out & left with a 61-58 win. Bach led Augusta with 27 points, while Camryn Snapp added 17 points & 6 rebounds. Connor Maddox had 10.

0-2 week for GRC

George Rogers Clark was hoping to score an upset when it hosted Mason County on Friday night, but the Royals' proved too much as the Cards fell 55-44. Senior big man Khmarkis Blanton had a strong performance with 17 points, while consistent junior guard Damion King tallied 11 in a losing effort. The next day GRC visited Lexington Christian, but again struggled to find the offense needed for victory, falling 60-53. The Cards were led by King & freshman wing Jerryd Jones who both scored 12 points.

Plenty of time for the forecast to change.

Just saw nWo's post. He confirmed what I heard--so you know it is going to be toasty warm! By that time the roads from Bracken may be clear enough for you to make the drive up to Alexandria? Game on! Senior night for the Mustangs.

Sounds like there may be able to soon be a snowsuit-less Randy.

What's the status of Jennings?

I think the rankings look good too.

That Augusta and Mason County game in the district will be closer than the last time they played. Mason will still win but it will be closer.

What's the status of Jennings?

Jennings will be honored on Senior night with the other 5 seniors. He has been dressing for games but will not be playing. They are not counting on him being back this year. But he is a tough kid wanting badly to finsih out his senior year, so you never know!
