Jay Leno's Final Tonight Show

Featured Replies

I think the best thing I ever heard on Leno's show was when he asked an astronaut what earthly sights could be seen from orbit.

I'm paraphrasing here - something along the lines of "rivers, clouds, and your chin".

Never watched him after the Conan fiasco.

I will watch Jimmy Fallon

He was forced out when it was turned over to Conan, ratings sucked and NBC relented and brought him back. Of course Jay's agent Helen Kushnick facilitated Carson getting forced out by NBC, so I guess NBC forcing him out again this time for Fallon is some sort of poetic justice.

I've never read that he was forced out. They decided in what..2004 that he would retire in 2009? It's not like he didn't see it coming.

Regardless, he knew what he was doing. His show "The Jay Leno Show" didn't work out and the ratings sucked, which probably didn't help Conan on The Tonight Show. I can't believe he would agree to move "The Tonight Show" to 1205 which is what NBC wanted to do to Conan.

I haven't been a fan of Leno since this whole incident. Well really I wasn't a fan before, but I don't like him at all now.

I honestly think Conan is better on TBS anyways. They let him do most of the things he was doing on Late Night when he was at his best.

That's the end of my rambling incoherent rant.

Well, yes and no. You're correct when you say "they". It wasn't Jay. It was NBC. They were afraid of losing O'Brien to another network, so they stuck a big carrot in front of him to keep him to stay. That is the only reason I think Leno announced his "retirement".

The kicker is, Leno was still doing well enough that NBC was now suddenly afraid of losing HIM to another network. So, they tried to have their cake and eat it too, by giving Jay a show at 10p when O'Brien took over the Tonight Show. For whatever reason, it didn't work out, and they were left having to put the pieces back together again.

If there's blame to be laid...it's at the feet of NBC.

I don't think Leno is as innocent in all of it as you make it out to be. A lot of people, including other talk show hosts and comedians felt like Jay did Conan wrong.

......

I haven't watched an episode of The Tonight Show in a lot of years, but I DVR'd this and watched it today. Thought it was really good from beginning to end, and the Billy Crystal / Sound of Music portion was great.

I hope Fallon makes the Tonight Show more entertaining than his Late Show. He didn't have any variety in his shows. Mondays were always the same, Tuesdays were always the same, and so on. Other than having Headlines on Monday, Jay had something different each night each week. Fallon is very talented, I hope he expands and doesn't keep do the same thing on his new show.
