February 5, 201412 yr Well what do you all think. doesnt this go against separation of church and state? New York City public school kids getting new Muslim, Lunar New Year holidays - NY Daily News
February 5, 201412 yr Author Technically, wouldn't Christmas be a religious holiday? I always thought of it as a winter break, much like spring break.
February 5, 201412 yr Technically, wouldn't Christmas be a religious holiday? That's what I was thinking. If you wanted to separate Church and State wouldn't that mandate that the government cannot recognize religious holidays for one religion such as Christianity with Christmas but not recognize them for other faiths such as Yom Kippur, Passover and Roshhash....I don't know how to spell it for Judiasm and whatever holidays for Islam?
February 5, 201412 yr I always thought of it as a winter break, much like spring break. So you would ok with winter break being the first two weeks of the year?
February 5, 201412 yr doesnt this go against separation of church and state? How do you define separation of church and state? I don't see how this could violate it.
February 5, 201412 yr I always thought of it as a winter break, much like spring break. Federal Government Employees get Christmas off. That is not a winter break for them.
February 5, 201412 yr Author Federal Government Employees get Christmas off. That is not a winter break for them. Going by what schools do, not those you listed
February 5, 201412 yr Author So you would ok with winter break being the first two weeks of the year? I don't care either way. I think in the world we live in today Christmas is celebrated more for Santa than Jesus birth.
February 5, 201412 yr Author How do you define separation of church and state? I don't see how this could violate it. I would guess by creating a holiday for a religious group when other schools in the country don't. At least all schools are the same for Christmas as made by the fed gov. But when one place singles put this I assume it's all religious. Something I thought everyone was against.

Not sure how if one school system were to do this, it violates church and state separation but if all schools do so, it is suddenly OK? Personally I don't think Muslim holidays should be observed nation wide. Christmas is observed due to historical and cultural influence on the country and since (I think) 80% of the country in some what shape or form observes Christianity. If every minority group's holidays were observed, things would get crazy. Saying that, if governments were to decide to allow Jews/Muslims/etc. to observe their holidays and give them a floating holiday, I have no problem with that. If I am not mistaken, Orthodox and Conservative Jews do not have to work on Saturday if they work for the Post Office.
February 5, 201412 yr How do you define separation of church and state? I don't see how this could violate it. It doesn't. This has always been one of the most confusing and misinterpretated things with this govt. Seperation of church and state has everything to do with the government not being able to force any specific religion on its citizens. That is what the original meaning of it was when the forefathers wrote about it. It kept the citizens from being persecuted for their religous beliefs. Closing schools for a religous holiday is not a violation of the law as it was originally written.
February 5, 201412 yr Should Good Friday be a school holiday? If I lived in NYC you better believe I would be demanding it.
