I was told today by an AD that only 4 schools in the 14th region will not be eligible (due to enrollment) to participate in the All A next year : Perry Central, Letcher Central, Powell County, and Estill County.

 

The new members joining the 14th All A (or are at least eligible to join, whether they join or not is up to them) are Breathitt County, Knott Central, and Leslie County. Those schools have been losing enrollment for several years now, so I guess they have finally made it to the 425 in grades 10-12 requirement.

It will make winning the All A region a lot tougher.

That will lead to a very crowded field if everyone decides on joining. It could also be a very good precursor as to who the favorites to take region will be (more so than now.)

I was told by an individual that attended the 14th Region Policy Board meeting yesterday that that was the talk by many of the board members. Those people would probably know before anyone else.

Leslie actually almost got in 2 years ago. They missed out by just a few numbers. I think the state All A does their new enrollment count every two years. So these schools are in at least for the next two years.

How many freshmen does Estill County have? The KHSAA lists their enrollment 9 through 12 as 692. If your 455 10 through 12 figure is correct, then they would have 237 freshmen.....that's a lot of freshmen (35% of the school).

This is not what the all a was intended to do.....Another rumor has it that if these schools get in the TRUE all A schools in the region will GET OUT of the tournament.

I would say that figure isnt that far off. If a freshmen class represents 35% of the school - that leaves about 21-22% to be scattered each among the three other grades.

 

I happen to know that is there is around 150 (give or take 10) seniors at the school so that would mean the other two classes would have about the same number.

 

Given that there is drop outs, movings in and out, withdrawls, etc, etc - I could see this number being correct.

 

I'd have to talk to someone from the school to verify this though.

You could start by saying that if you are 2A in football then you are not a true all A school...if you are A in football then you are. If you have 250 freshman and 425 10-12 that puts you at 675. That would put you at 3A in florida, and Tenn. and I'm sure other states. 650 or more you are not an all a school.

Acccording to the KHSAA Knott has 650 students in grades 9 through 12 and Leslie has 618. Therefore it appears that unless Leslie has a huge freshmen class this year heading into their sophomore class next year, that they are actually smaller enrollment than Knott.
