The decision for Coach Woolfe to stay or not would seem to totally be Coach Engels to make wouldn't it? Would Turner force him to hire Woolfe?

 

Could have been part of the deal. Those decisions were made behind closed doors. Realistically how could you pass up having woolf on your staff? That's really a no brainer.

The truth lies somewhere between two opposing viewpoints. Matt's viewpoints and my viewpoints would be markedly different from those of ILTBB, who writes with strong emotion from a "what I hear" perspective. Man, has he heard a lot!! Bryson and I have had MANY chats and much agreement yet some strong disagreements face-to-face over the years. I have had no skin in the game as a volunteer at Ryle and an "ex-Ryle active sports participant parent" without children on a team since 2006 baseball. I did not ask Matt or Bryson but my guess is that they agreed to performance improvement goals after the 2012 season that were not met in 2013. Thus, the coaching change. We still have a stable of coaches that have been there a long time and are running successful programs: wrestling, boys' soccer, baseball, the 8 teams of cross-country, golf, tennis and track. There have been some very legitimate and needed coaching changes IMHWO. I agree to disagree strongly and certainly respect your opinion. Call me any time and I'll pay for your lunch and we can talk if you'd like to do that.

First, I 100% believe coach Woolf should have gotten the job. And it make me sad and angry he didn't get it. With that being said I know Matt Turner. And right or wrong he does not make a decision that he does not think out and believe it is what is best for Ryle and their students. I know it must have been one of the hardest things he has ever done to look coach Woolf in the eye and tell him he didn't get the job. He knows how much coach Woolf loves Ryle, their students and football. I hope and pray coach Woolf stays at Ryle. I know how much the students and players love him. But I would understand if he does not stay. But if you really know Matt Turner, you would know he made this choice because he in his heart he believes it was the right one.

As an outsider looking in this is my take exactly.

 

I have a lot of respect for Mike Woolf and I have talked to countless current and former players that LOVE Coach Woolf.

 

At the same time, I 100% believe Matt Turner labored over this decision and did what he thought was best for the Ryle Football Program and Ryle High School.

Are Turner's Angels referring to specific people? or parents in general. I wonder if the "Turners Angels" even had a choice in the decision or did Turner just put them on the committee for show and picked the offense he liked the most.

I have no idea what is going on at Ryle (good or bad), but don't count cross-country, golf, tennis, or track as team sports. You can have success as a team and you need a good coach, but those sports are all played individually and you can't blame a lack of success for your kid on anybody else. They are individual sports that add up to a team score. Completely different game for coaches.

I understand what you are saying, but school dynamics with all of these supposedly "impossible parents" are still the same. Would not parents complain about why their child is not #2 doubles instead of #3 or why they are not running this set of events or why they are JV instead of varsity in a given sport?

Every school has those issues and parents who will always think that Johnny should be used differently etc. the difference is it has seemed at Ryle that the coaches or whoever made the decisions seemed to do what parents of Johnny would say.

I just never saw this "coaches do what Johnny's parents say" phenomenon and I have volunteered at Ryle a lot for 7 years AFTER my kids were done playing. Sure, I saw parents complain but that is an American problem, not a Ryle-unique problem.

You are right, like I said it goes on all over the place. But everyplace doesn't have half a dozen dads on the sidelines either.

Offense needed period you are correct. True about dads on sidelines but that had nothing to do with offensive woes IMHWO.

How about several different OC's over the past few years and this year they took a DB coach who had never called an offensive play. Great coach and was not going to be the OC after 1 year on the job if Bryson stayed but yet the defense has been the strong suit of Ryle and they have had the same man in charge of that for 10 years.

In Individual sports, every thing is objective so what can a parent complain

about when it comes to playing time. You play #3 in doubles because

in practice the #2 double team beat you, and you are ranked #1 because you beat

everyone else in practice that simple. You run this

event in track because your time is the best or your jump is the highest

or farthest. In wrestling, you beat the other 103 wrestler so you are Varsity

he is JV. In Golf pretty simple who has the lowest rounds. In team sports

it comes down to lots of intangibles and subjective opinions of coaches as to who

he believes should play. Never do all parents agree with how their child is

being used within the team concept or how much he is playing. Now add in

the difference in opinion in the X's and o's and strategy and you have complaining

parents. Every school has them, yes. However, can not think of any school

that has lost over 12 coaches and at least 6 Head Coaches in one year because

of complaints from parents. There are 3 Head Team Sport Coaches that

survived at Ryle after the last year, Baseball, Volleyball, and Boys Soccer

and one of those served a suspension a couple of years ago due to a

complaint from parents. Obviously, coaching at Ryle does not seem to

be an easy thing to do and there seems to be a common denominator.

Earlier you indicated the loss of 2 dance coaches. So, I guess dance is a team sport and wrestling and the others are not? I have no idea what happened with dance coaching.
