Technical Foul Question

Featured Replies

Its only a T if the official thinks that the intent of the slap was to shake the basket.

I'm pretty sure it is NOT B.I. if the official thinks it was an honest attempt to block the shot.

Like I said in my post, official's discretion.

Another wierd question--Can the refs actually "T" up the crowd, or someone in it, if they get out of hand; or is their only option to have the offender removed??

I think their only option is removing the fan from the gym.

I thought so, but have heard they can "T" up the home crowd if they don't cooperate?? Can't imagine a situation where this would matter, as fans are generally very well behaved!! :D

Like I said in my post, official's discretion.

You said it was the discretion on the T and you were correct. However, you said it is Basket Interference which is not true. Its either a T or its nothing as the play was described.

Its only BI if the defender touches the ball or the basket including the net WHILE the ball is on the rim or in the cylinder.

How about this.

NFHS rules are that if a player shoots the ball on the backboard and the defender slaps the backboard in the process and the shot does not go in, then the official should award the basket and can assess a technical to the defender or to his team.

I was at the East Jessamine-LCA game on Friday evening. The referrees called a techinal foul on East Jessamine for apparently not reporting back to the court timely after half-time. I believe that there was just under a minute when they started across the court from the locker room. What is the rule on this?

I was not aware of this rule????

NFHS rules? Can you cite a rule number? Are you sure you're not thinking NBA?

There is no such wording in the rulebook I am familiar with. Now mine is a few years old but I have not heard of any changes. Rule 9-11 does not support what you have above.

I am basing my information on what a friend of mine told me tonight, and he didn't give a rule number, but he stated he got it from NFHS Basketball Officials Manual.

OK. I don't think he's correct. I'll check with some other officials.

Please let me know. I don't want to state wrong information. Thanks

Sounds Like a good call to me. A team should allways be aware of the time on the clock no matter if it is during a time out or during half time!

I have verified that the above is true. No Basket Interference should be called as the play has been described.

I don't know the ruling on it. This will teach them to hurry up from now on.

I thought basket interference was also called if player is attempting a lay up, ball is shot off the glass and defender blocks the ball after it has hit the glass. The ball is not necessarily above the cylinder yet or on the rim. Is that the case??? I am under the impression that as long as the defender makes contact with the ball before it gets to the glass or pins it on the glass at the same time the ball makes contact with the backboard that it is clean block not basket interference.

Your confusion there has to do with NBA rules which restrict blocking the shot after it touches the glass. In HS as long as you block the shot before it reaches its apex you are OK. This would rarely happen after touching the glass but is possible.
