2014 10th Region Class A Tournament Preview

 

NKU's Regents Hall is the site for this year's 10th Region Class A Tournament, which gets underway with a play-in game on Friday, January 10th & concludes with the championship game exactly one week later. Mike Code's Bishop Brossart Mustangs are the clear-cut favorite to cut down the nets for a 5th consecutive year. As of this writing the 'Stangs have 14 wins out of 15 tries & will likely have earned their 15th win by the time they take the court Saturday at noon. Ranked #2 in the 10th Region rankings all year long, and knocking on the door of a state ranking, Brossart seems too strong for the rest of the field due to their size & by simply having the most talented team. If there is a threat to unseat Brossart's stranglehold on the Class A crown, it would be Jason Hinson and the Augusta Panthers--Brossart's opening round opponent & the team it defeated in last year's title game.

Note: The Girls 10th Region Class A is being held at the same venue & brackets are the same for it. On each date you see below, there are girls games preceding boys games.

The Top 10 Players

1. Brent Bach - 6'1" Sr (Augusta): Top player & scorer (30.9) in the 10th is worth the price of admission.

2. Alex Trentman - 6'7" Sr. (Bishop Brossart): Long & lean big man has stepped up his production for the 'Stangs.

3. Drew Burns - 6'7" Sr. (Bishop Brossart): Powerful post presence will have his way in the paint.

4. Austin Crawford - 6'1" Fr. (Bracken County): Smooth-operating point guard doesn't play like a freshman.

5. Tyler Newton - 5'11" Jr. (Nicholas County): Coach's son has had an outstanding year for the Jackets.

6. Koebe Garrard - 6'3" Soph. (Paris): Powerful sophomore leads the 'Hounds in scoring (16.1) & rebounding (6.1).

7. Camryn Snapp - 6'3" Soph. (Augusta): Versatile forward does a little bit of everything for the Panthers.

8. Jake Jennings - 5'10" Sr. (Bishop Brossart): Brossart floor general handles, distributes, defends, & leads.

9. Dawson Cooper - 6'2" Jr. (Robertson County): Junior forward has been pouring in the points for the Black Devils.

10. Andrew Sticklen - 6'5" Jr. (St. Patrick): Athletic big man is the leader for the struggling Saints.

 

 

Upset Alerts

 

This bracket doesn't seem set up for much in terms of upsets. The top half of the bracket is the strong half, with the top two teams (Bishop Brossart & Augusta) squaring off in the Quarterfinals. While Augusta boasts the talent of Bach, Brossart counters with the twin towers frontcourt of Trentman & Burns. It's hard to see Augusta being able to overcome that size advantage. The Panthers have struggled against size quite a bit thus far in 2013-14.

 

Paris & Bracken County, two teams that seem evenly matched, will likely meet in the other top bracket Quarterfinal. Whatever the outcome of that one it won't be a surprise, although the Greyounds seem to be playing more like the team we expected they'd be at the season's outset.

 

The bottom half would seem to favor Nicholas County, but the Jackets have been up & down this year. They've already beaten their Quarterfinal round opponent, Robertson County earlier in the year (59-53). St. Patrick & Silver Grove play in the other Quarterfinal. The two teams squared off on December 30th & the Trains came away with a 24-point win. Silver Grove has also beaten Nicholas County this season, although the Jackets were dealing with injuries at the time.

 

In short, we don't foresee any upsets since the only one (in our minds) would be someone other than Bishop Brossart taking the title. We recognize that eight coaching staffs might want to use this as bulletin board material, but we don't anticipate the Mustangs having a great deal of difficulty in winning their 5th straight championship.

Looks like the top 4 teams are all in the top half.

 

A Paris/Bracken Co quarterfinal game could be a good one.

I held the belief that Augusta could upset BB in the opening round. Key word is HELD. After seeing the Stangs tonight, I don't think anyone comes within 20 of them. Just my .02.

The player list is the best comedy relief I've had in a month of Sundays.

 

 

I can't help but notice that your list is slightly divergent from the allaclassic list. I tend to lean towards yours from an accuracy standpoint.
