Wish I could have made it to the announcement but clients got in the way. I obviously think it was a great hire. I'm sure Brian will put his own stamp on things, but I'd be surprised if anything changes much. When you have a successful organization (any organization) and there is a change at the top, if you have someone internal that provides every indication that he or she is capable of successfully taking the reins, you give the reins to him or her. It doesn't always work out but very often it does. Brian understands the school, the administration, the program, the players and the community. No learning curve involved. I hate to bring up a bad wound, but I can't help but think about all the angst and heartburn that was caused when CovCath hired a football coach that didn't understand or appreciate the CovCath way.

 

Highlands has had a lot of success when it hired one of it's own, be that a former player or assistant coach, as its head coach. Homer played at Highlands; he was replaced by an assistant (Owen Hauck); Owen was replaced by an assistant coach (Mike Murphy); Mike was replaced by an assistant coach (Roger Walz); Roger was replaced by an assistant coach (Jack Eicher); Jack was replaced by a very good coach but an outsider (Tom Duffy); Tom was replaced by a former player (Dale). All of those coaches with the exception of Jack have won state championships. The one outsider (Duffy) did win state championships but did a whole lot of damage to the program out in the community in the process and I am totally convinced that had he remained at Highlands, the football program would have been turned into shambles.

 

So I'm really glad that Brian got the job. If he had not, my guess is that he would have left Highlands and taken a HC job elsewhere. If he had, he'd probably have taken a couple of asst coaches with him. One of the biggest (but often overlooked) reasons for so much success at Highlands during Dale's tenure, is the continuity of his coaching staff. So we'd not only have to replace a HC, but a DC and several other coaches also. Not the kind of thing you want to have happen in any organization when that organization is being very successful.

 

 

Bottom line with me: I believe that Brian is very qualified; he understands "Highlands football" and its relationship with the community; he has certainly earned the shot; and to have not hired him would/could have created turmoil at a time when the players need to be doing the things that will help them win the state championship this coming December. It was a true "no brainer" hire for me.
