Well he couldn't win it all this year with way above average talent, and only seems to win when he has superior players. Does this mean he can't coach unless he has the horses. Which begs to ask the question, can he really coach or just always has great players.

 

Mountain, respectfully, you are wrong. He has won with "inferior" talent, at least according to many posters on BGP. (See threads regarding Trinity's state championship in 2005.)

So you are going to use one season to support your claim despite the 10 plus seasons where often he didn't have the most talent in the state and still won the state championship? Wow. Several years where X or Male had more talent than T and he would be the one victorious in December. Just wow.

That is the opinion shared by many who have little exposure to the Trinity program and just assume every year Trinity fields teams packed with D1 talent due to their success. Look at Bob's early years. Most years when Trinity faced Male, Bob Redman brought more speed and talent to the field than Bob Beatty did but Beatty still won several more than he lost to Redman. In the mid 2000's many times X had more talent than Trinity, especially on the lines, running backs and maybe defense overall. Again, more often than not Bob would win or would recoup from a regular season loss and win in the playoffs versus X. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Trinity w/o question had the most talent in the state so they went out of the state playing teams that up till then no one believed a KY school could beat with any type of consistency. In that three year period, Bob did beat them pretty consistently and in one of the years took home a share of the high school "National Title". So, accomplishing that, is "can he coach or just always has great players" really a legit question?

 

Now, if you want to knock him for last season, that might be fair I guess. But based upon what he brought to the table in the decade leading up to this past season still supports him as one of the premier coaches in KY and by many media outlets, one of the premier coaches across the country.

When watching some of the teams Male and X fielded in the previous decade (actually watching the games, not reading about them on BGP), I would say a handful of years Trinity didn't have the most talent.

You may know more than me about Chuck Smith but the rumor going around Richmond is he turned it down. I may be 100% wrong on that but I will say it is taking a while for Madison Central to hire a coach and Chuck Smith could have taken the job several weeks ago by now. Chuck Smith would not end up at Trinity in my opinion as of yet he needs a few more years in the public school to retire.

Chuck Smith was in the final three for the Trinity job and ultimately the runner up to Kevin Wright after Coach Beatty withdrew his name in 1999. I do not believe anyone else was considered after Coach Wright stepped down.

Chuck has a lot of ties to people in Richmond his old Boyle County Principal is now the superintendent of the Madison County Schools and I believe the head principal at Madison Central was either an assistant principal or also the head principal at Boyle County High School for a short period when Chuck Smith was there. Madison Central wants him bad and Chuck may take it or like I said may have turned it down by now because I'm quite sure it was offered to him 2 or 3 weeks ago and nothing has happened yet.

 

As far as a private school Chuck only needs 5-7 years to retire from the KTRS so if he went to Trinity or Lexington Catholic then he would have to go back to retire after his stent at the private school or basically give up on retiring which financially would not be smart for the rest of his life. It would make much more sense for him to go to a public school for whatever the number of years he would need and then if he wants to coach at a private school after that he can double dip and stay as long as he wants if that's what he wants to do.

To do what he has done you have to be able to coach, but can he win like he has at a rural public school where he doesnt have talent every year like he does at Trinity and kids have to choose jobs over sports or cant get to practice because the family dont have a car or gas money. He dont deal with that type of kid.

I personally can attest to the fact that more players than you imagine live in circumstances that are less than ideal.
