Well, well, well...If you didn't think that I wouldn't be back to discuss the game, you are as naive as thinking NCC would name the score and that none of the HHS players would start for NCC.

 

HHS sweeps the Breds on the hill.

 

I know they are saying they didn't shoot well, but I'm not sure why they didn't shoot well. Like I said in pre-game, HHS won't leave the paint to guard them and they didn't. Their shooters were wide open all night. So I'm not sure why they didn't shoot well. Or maybe they are as good outside as Zap thinks! By the way, HHS did not make one 3 pointer and I think NCC had at least 5.

 

HHS shot awful again. I can't tell you how many layups they missed. Once this team starts to gain more confidence in their shooting, they could be dangerous!

 

I think Kiernan had 12 and Mayes 6. It's a shame we are so terrible on the inside.

 

HHS never in any foul trouble in this one.

 

Also noticed that NCC had a lot of 1 and outs on offense. How in the world does that happen?? According to everyone, that would be an issue for the birds in this game.

 

I seem to remember several comments in the Pre-game. Here's some that stood out.

"Game won't be close"

"no contest"

"Highlands has zero answer inside"

"no chance"

"Highlands will only get one shot on their end and NCC will get multiples" (seems like that was the other way around)

"NCC will name the score!" (one of my favorites!)

"NCC is better at every position on the floor WITHOUT QUESTION!" (My other favorite!)

"She's (hhs big girl) is going to be in foul trouble...how could she not?" (think she had maybe 1 foul in the game)

"NCC is just better! Better players. Better team. Inside, outside, anyway HHS wants to play it. NCC will have the answer. NCC will dictate how the game is played, not HHS" (this is another great one!!!!! Turned out just the opposite.)

"I will make a disclaimer, if Highlands shoots 75% from 3, they will keep it close as would anyone." (HHS was 0-7 from 3 and shot 39% (15-38) for the game...counting 2's and 3's)"Seems like everyone sees it as a 15-20 point spread like I do" (well you were all wrong!)

 

 

As a disclaimer to everyone else, you know I'm only gloating because of the rediculous comments about the Birds. I still think NCC is the best team in the 9th when it comes down to it. HHS had a nice game plan and executed it to a tee tonight. They beat a very good team. People underestimate this team because there are no superstars (yet). But this team plays great defense and plays as a team. There is a different player step up in each win and they play together. Congrats to the Birds! Now get to bed. You're off to play Green Co tomorrow at 2:30 in Frankfort!!!!

Sounds like Coach Walz (never can remember her married name) came up with another great game plan. She can coach.

I hate to say I told ya so and toot my own horn but I told ya so and toot, toot. I love both teams but this really don't surprise me as I stated in the prediction thread. Nice win by the lady birds and the Lady Breds will bounce back from this. Both teams are talented and very well coached. Waiting on RCC to get on here guns ablazin.

Just about a full house tonight up on the "hill", and the home fans left very disappointed and scratching their heads about this one. NewCath had a 3 point lead at the break and it was a tied ballgame after 3. Highlands takes a 6 point lead with about 4 minutes to go, but the Breds score 6 straight to tie it. With about a minute to go Birds lead by 2 and then the Breds resort to fouling after missing some shots down the stretch, Loren Zimmerman hits a 3 at the buzzer for the final margin. However, Highlands in complete control during the 4th.

 

Congrats to Coach Richey and the Birds on executing a great game plan and pulling out the victory. :thumb: All night long they "dared" the Breds to shoot by playing a 2-3 Zone, and denying the ball into Nikki Kiernan. The NewCath press really didn't faze the Birds tonight.

 

NewCath missed so many shots the Birds had no reason to come out of there Zone. The Breds looked like "deer in headlights" as to what to do. They were getting open looks from beyond the arc, but they just didn't fall. I'd be shocked if the hit 20% from the field. IMO, they could have done a better of job of going inside to Kiernan. The other thing that jumped out at me in this one.............Highlands shoots FT's really well, while the Breds :no:

 

There are not many nights that the Breds will shoot this poorly, but it happens. I'm sure the Breds are disappointed with this one, but they need to put this one behind them, work on a few things and come back ready to play.

We'll that went just the way I thought it would. I'll go with the NCC played as bad as they can, shot horribly and look forward to the district rematch. But in all honesty great game plan by highlands basically only way to play it on defense. Sit back in the zone and surround Kiernan and hope for a bad shooting night. Great thing with girls high school sports you never know on any given day. For most part forcing girls to knock in 3s can be a great strategy. Congrats to highlands and it appears #1 in town has a lot of debates to it. Great crowd for a girls Friday night game. Enjoy rcc9

Junior forwards Lydia Graves and Alex Combs combined for eight fourth-quarter free throws as Highlands handed Newport Central Catholic its first loss of the season, 45-40 on Friday.

 

Combs led all scorers with 14 points, including six in the final frame during which she hit all four of her foul shots.

 

Graves finished with six points – all in the final stanza. She was 4-for-5 from the line.

 

Sophomore guard Brianna Adler racked up 10 points for the Bluebirds, who have won nine of their last 10.

 

Senior forward Nikki Kiernan paced the Thoroughbreds with 12 points.

Not terribly shocked about this. Not surprised that Coach Richey employed a 2-3 zone, as that is the best strategy to pack it in on Kiernan and Mayes. NCC is not an "explosive" offensive team by any means, their calling card is defense and rebounding. NCC did their job of holding a good HHS team to 45 points......but the birds did an even better job of holding the Breds to 40. Congrats to Coach Richey and her team, and good luck to the Breds. I still think NCC the favorite to win the 9th, although they are not a "lock", as the Birds just laid the blueprint on how to defend them.

Let's just say the Birds made the 9th a wide open contest again. A great win.

 

Jan 8 Bishop Brossart vs NCC should be a dual region game to watch as well.
