Coaching Responsibilities

Featured Replies

Some of the more known responsibilities include: evaluating players, designing a game plan, and winning games.

But, Coaches have other responsibilities that seem to be less known and less focused on: like getting recognition for the players that play for them. This point comes up in the lack of nominating players for post season awards and voting for post season awards.

Before someone points out that coaching pay is not what many think it should be, and the hours worked are high, my arguments for that is: they accepted the job and should do it. I agreed to do my job for "X" amount of money, after I started working it I don't get to say, "Hey, I'm only doing part of that job because it's hard". I'll get fired for doing that.

96 out of 221 coaches voted for the All-State Team. That number is embarrassing to the state and the sport. The argument has been stated that coaches don't get to see all the players, I don't find that as a valid argument, many of the fans and many members of BGP know who the big players are in the state, how can the coaches around the state not know? Also, with the technology available now, it is very easy to find highlight videos, profiles, articles, and even full games of virtually every player in the state.

Something that is even less work: nominating YOUR players. It takes very little effort for a coach to nominate players, what does it say for the coach that doesn't even take the 15 minutes to nominate the best players on their teams? Nothing against some of the players on the various "All-State" list and "All-Star" game rosters, but I have personally seen some in my area, and around the state, that are more deserving then some on the list. The difference? Those players were not nominated.

Coaches take head coaching jobs and have various responsibilities that go beyond winning games, they need to recognize this, school administrations need to hold coaches to fulfilling their responsibilities, and coaches should recognize that players getting state and national recognition only promotes their program and makes their jobs easier; not see post-season awards as something they shouldn't "waste" their time with.

Here's a quote for another thread:

It's a shame for all coaches not participating in these because it's the kids who busted their butts for 12 years to get to the point where they finally deserve to be recognized for all the hard work and improvement they have made only to be left off because their coaches don't think its worth their time to nominate and vote.

It's a shame really. It's the same thing for ky vs Loisville all star teams and ky vs Tn all star teams.

These kids get no other chance of being recognized after all these years of playing the sport and to be left off soley due to the coaches not wanting to be bothered is a shame.

Again congrats to all those named and for those that deserved to be but weren't, you all are not forgotten by us at all. You all were great and will be remembered for your performances on Fri Nights.

You mean 96 out of 221.

It has never made sense to have coaches vote anyway. Most coaches only watch the teams that are on their schedule, and have no idea about players other than who they have to prepare for. I'm not sure that this the answer, but maybe the coaches should only count for part of the vote along with the media. Also, I find it hard to believe that coaches are not advertising for their own players, but only 96 voting speaks volumes about how the coaches view this award. If that's the case, take it out of their hands.

But it's just not this award, it's a lot of them. Outside their individual district awards I think their are a lot of coaches that simply choose not to participate in without even realizing that these other honors may be the kids last ounce of recognition they have worked so hard for.

If there are only 96 coaches out of 221 actually voting for this particular honor, I think it's very sad. I am sure the majority of these coaches expect certain things from their players such as not missing practices etc. Then the coaches should also be counted in to do what's right also.

Open records law

Someone get courier journal to release who did and didn't vote, coaches have to put name on the all state ballot I think.

Yes. Typo.

I don't have a problem with not voting. I would hope they would at least nominate their best players though.

If they didn't vote, you know they didn't nominate their players, if so, they would have voted for their players.

I don't think you are allowed to vote for your own.

(I wont name the coach or school but will say it is in Pike County and the coach back then is somewhere else now)

I talked to a college coach here in Ohio, who had sent some questionnaires to a group of players from this school and he said to me he never heard nothing back. well later on I met a few of these players, while attending the Pike County bowl. We got on the subject of who if anyone was recruiting them. I asked if they had gotten anything from any coach and they all said no. I said I know for a fact that a local college coach here in Ohio had sent them all something and sent them to the head coach at the schools address. All the players saud we have not got a thing from the coach.

I found this sad and odd that a coach would not give the college stuff to his players.

Not in this day and age. That use to be an accurate statement, but due to the evolving world of Hudl (spelled correctly; the online film editing and do everything you can imagine as far as breaking down film software), coaches get to see a lot more than themselves, opponents and opponents-opponents.

Were the players any count at all? I ask this because, colleges coaches, especially the local small colleges will look at nothing, but rosters and the names of seniors to be, often times asking about them even though the coach has had the opportunity to see them. Sometimes the kid(s) they ask about in an email can't play dead, so of course the coaches aren't going to recommend them to the college recruiter as a player….however, I know several coaches who recommend these types of kids to the colleges as potential "student coaches" in some capacity.

Then again, you also have to wonder about the sources you are asking, too. Because, believe it or not…there are a lot of kids who might put out a front to you and others that they WANT to play college football, but deep down, they don't want to. So with that said, it's easier for them to tell you "Coach hasn't given me anything" than it is to tell you "I don't want to play college football." (^^^Fact)

I'm just giving a couple different real scenarios….

I understand, but my point is: if they didn't take the time to nominate their players, they didn't take the time to vote either. Poorly stated on my part.

This is more common than most people would think. I know of many of the same type stories. This is why I tell potential college athletes that they have to be "involved" in their own recruiting. If they wait for someone else to do it for them, they will be disappointed. I know of one player several years ago invited to play in the State All-Star Game, the coach never gave him the invitation. He found out about it later when he saw the letter on the coaches desk addressed to him.

This is also a true scenario. Some players have no desire to play college football, or have no desire to play for the one or two colleges that are recruiting them. Some of these players just don't want to tell people they don't want to play college football.
