Is Edward Snowden A Traitor?

Featured Replies

Read an interesting article on how the Snowden files came to light and what his reasons were for releasing them.

I hear some govt officials calling him a traitor. Agree or disagree? At what point do you cross the line from trying to keep America honest and on the right path over to a traitor?

Your thoughts.

I've thought about this some and honestly I keep going back and forth...by definition he was a traitor...but many would also say he was a true patriot bringing light to what some would say was over reaching by the government. Mr. Snowden is quite the paradox.

You say "by definition."

How do we define a traitor?

Standard definition I've always heard is one that betrays a trust or betrays his country by supporting or helping their enemies, he was entrusted with Top Secret information and gave that information out.

Patriot: a person who loves and strongly supports or fights for his or her country, which many say he did. He fought for his country not his government.

Cool. That's basically the definition I use as well.

This case isn't clear cut.

One of the few things that doesn't even breakdown to either political side.

Well I guess it does somewhat...GOP and Dem's pretty much think he is a Traitor and Tea Party for the most part think he is a Patriot.

Would you consider someone who gave support, arms, and money to our enemies a traitor ??

He's a traitor in my eyes. Why? He had a job working for the government and made his own call about what is right and wrong. He released that information when he shouldn't have and then fled the country looking for asylum.

Smells like a traitor to me.

Yes.

Yes.

You're being baited. Don't bite.

Without researching the whole story and just going by the brief tid bits I've got from the news I would lean more towards hero as opposed to "traitor". Personally it seems like Snowden is just sticking up for American freedoms, he was involved in a program that he obviously felt guilty about once he saw what was going down so he had to pull the plug on it. For recognizing something isn't right and that it goes against the Constitution takes a good American IMO. America as a whole is too quick to trust everything, including their governments and the government programs. Probably need to start being a little more careful when it comes to that IMO, Snowden just tried to show everyone this.

There is being a traitor to your chain of command. And then there is being a traitor to the common oath of all government 'employees' in key positions - that to defend and protect the Constitution. Those can be in conflict at times, so I agree with Jumper Dad.

You're being baited. Don't bite.

It's all good. :thumb:
