As does our team. The players almost always travel by school bus because the players and coaches prefer it, especially the "Large" guys.

 

As to the question: I pick Option 3. Raceland does some other things on longer trips to prevent "Bus Lag".

Last year Cooper traveled every week on the day of the game and that included the Semi final in Harlan County and the state title game at WKU. They put over 1500 miles during the playoffs in travel and although we were worried about the 4+ hour bus rides if it would affect the boys, it never seemed to. Then again one nice thing Cooper does when they play in the playoffs on the road they rent charter busses to take the boys to the games which is much better than sitting on a school bus for 4+ hours.

Do you mind sharing why they decided not to travel the night before?

 

The reason to travel the night before is to have the team well rested and full of energy. I believe the consensus was no one slept well in the hotel, the next day dragged on and by the time the game got there, the kids were drained and lacked energy more than they would after just riding the bus down on game day.

Not sure what the athletic budgets are at theses schools are you guys are from, but spending the night in a hotel for most teams I know is just not an option.

 

BTW, just don't think putting 3 to 4 teenage boys in a hotel room for a night translates to a good night's sleep.

I really think the same thing. I'm 6'2 and think it's easier to sleep on a yellow bus than a charter bus.

Does the KHSAA provide a stipend for schools who have to travel over "x" amount of miles to play a playoff game? It seems like they provide reimbursement for schools at the Sweet 16 up to a certain point.

When Mayfield has had to travel to Beechwood they go up Thanksgiving day. They charter some buses and the boys travel in style. They get a good nights sleep and not have to worry about a long bus ride. When they go to state they also go up early.

The gate money from all playoff games is split between the home team and visiting team. The split gate is to provide a travel stipend to the visiting team.

I would imagine that some schools might sell a "season pass" or something similar as a way of keeping the gate revenue that they actually have to split minimized. Also, is there a standard price for tickets or does the host school set it?

I don't know how they keep the schools honest. Yes, there is a standard price.

Gotcha. Seems like something that would be difficult to enforce. Obviously, if there are thousands in the stands and a school gets a check that's just grossly inadequate then it's one thing, but I wonder how they keep schools from pocketing a few extra 100's.

We always break the trip up into sections. Travel an hour or so, stop and have a "walk though" at a school or college, travel a while, stop and eat, then travel the rest of the way getting their early.

 

It's better to break a four hour trip up into three one and half hour trips.
